Shaping healthier school environments through co-design
On 7 October 2026, HRIDAY, in collaboration with the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi), held Co-design Workshop II for SHIELD-A (School-Based Healthy-Heart Intervention Program for Early Lipid Disorders among Adolescents) at AIIMS.
The workshop brought together students, parents, teachers and experts to review and refine the proposed school-based intervention. Building on the first co-design workshop, discussions focused on making activities practical, inclusive and relevant to the everyday lives of adolescents.
Participants shared their perspectives across five interconnected themes:
🥗 Nutrition and Dietary Education
🏃 Physical Activity and Mindfulness
💚 Mental Health Promotion
📱 Screen Time and Sleep Hygiene
🚭 Tobacco, Alcohol, Substance Use Prevention
Through group discussions, activity worksheets and prioritisation exercises, the workshop placed stakeholder voices at the centre of intervention development.
We thank our collaborators at AIIMS and all participants for their valuable contributions towards shaping SHIELD-A and supporting adolescent heart health.

Three HRIDAY abstracts accepted at the IDF World Congress 2027!
We are delighted to share that three abstracts from HRIDAY’s research and programme work have been accepted for presentation at the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) World Congress 2027. Together, they reflect our focus on bringing community voices, lived experience and evidence into diabetes action and health system strengthening across India and South Asia.
1️⃣ Grassroots to Global: A Community-led, Lived Experience Model for Type 1 Diabetes in India (Phase 1)
Led by HRIDAY with UDAAN and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), with support from Beyond Type 1. The initiative places people living with Type 1 diabetes at the centre of awareness and action, linking community dialogue, co-created resources and grassroots action in Delhi, Aurangabad and Chennai.
2️⃣ From Lived Experience to Health System Action: Community-led Demand Generation for Multiple Long-Term Conditions
This work examines how a co-created Community Engagement and Involvement (CEI) model draws on community champions and lived experience networks to build demand for primary healthcare and make health systems more responsive in India and Nepal.
3️⃣ Multiple Long-Term Conditions among People with Diabetes: Associations with Self-Rated Health and Disability in India
An analysis of LASI Wave 1 data by HRIDAY, looking at how co-occurring long-term conditions affect self-rated health and disability among older adults with diabetes, and pointing to the need for integrated care.

HRIDAY at #EFICON2026
HRIDAY took part in the 7th Annual National Conference of the Epidemiology Foundation of India (EFICON 2026), held 2-4 October 2026 at Panjab University, Chandigarh. This year’s theme was “Data to Decisions for Responsive and Resilient Health Systems.”
Neeru Chaudhary, Communications Officer at HRIDAY, presented a Poster titled “Addressing Type 1 Diabetes Stigma through Community Conversations and Lived Experience Leadership: Findings from the India Grassroots to Global Initiative.”
India has one of the world’s highest burdens of Type 1 Diabetes in children and adolescents. Stigma leads many to hide their condition and delay care.
Under the Grassroots to Global Initiative, HRIDAY worked with Udaan : Empowering Children with Type 1 Diabetes (Aurangabad) and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (Chennai), with support from Beyond Type 1.
Together we:
➡️ Held 6 community conversations with 52 participants across Delhi NCR, Aurangabad and Chennai.
➡️ Identified key myths and barriers: the “excess sugar” myth, COVID-vaccine myths, home remedies and false cures, and the cost of insulin and access to it.
➡️ Co-created a toolkit, posters, reels and wall art with the community.
➡️ Reached an estimated 530,000 people on the ground through street theatre, wall paintings and wellness sessions.
➡️ Generated 810,000+ digital impressions.
➡️ Built a network of 200+ Lived Experience Ambassadors who take part in governance, peer support and outreach.
The key takeaway is that community-led models can uncover hidden drivers of T1D stigma. Pairing formative assessments, co-created resources and lived experience leadership can turn those findings into culturally relevant outreach at scale.
Gratitude to our co-authors and partners: Dr Mansi Chopra, Riddhi Modi, Dr. Dr. Archana Sarda, Guha Pradeepa, Dr. Amutha Anandakumar, Dr. Lakshmi Karthikeyan , PhD, Radhika Shrivastav and Dr. Monika Arora.

HRIDAY at #EFICON2026
At the 7th Annual National Conference of the Epidemiology Foundation of India (2-4 October 2026, Panjab University, Chandigarh), HRIDAY presented its work under the NIHR Global Health Research Centre for Multiple Long-Term Conditions (MLTCs).
Tanvi Dhadwal, Research Associate at HRIDAY, gave an Oral Presentation titled “Establishing Consensus and Content Validity for a Community Readiness Tool for Multiple Long-Term Conditions: A Delphi Study.”
In India and Nepal, more and more people are living with two or more chronic conditions at the same time. Pooled multimorbidity prevalence is about 20% in India and 25% in Nepal. Communities differ in how ready they are to respond, so readiness needs to be measured with tools that fit the local context. This study adapted the Community Readiness Model into a Community Readiness Tool (CRT) for NCDs/MLTCs and tested its content validity through a Delphi process.
➡️ Delphi panel: 20 experts invited and 16 participated (India, Nepal and the UK), including subject specialists, healthcare professionals, local leaders, caregivers and people living with NCDs/MLTCs
➡️ Rounds: Two rounds, conducted April–June 2026, with 100% retention in Round 2
➡️ Key findings: All 5 community readiness domains were retained. Content validity improved from 0.76 in Round 1 to 0.86 in Round 2, resulting in a final interviewer-administered tool of 27 questions
➡️ Next steps: Field testing for comprehensibility, feasibility, scoring consistency and reliability
The key takeaway is that community readiness assessment for MLTCs should keep the core readiness framework while reflecting the health issue and local context.
Thanks to our co-authors Dr. Saurabh Gupta, Dr Mansi Chopra and Dr. Monika Arora, to all Delphi panelists, to the project teams in India and Nepal, and to the CEI team of the NIHR Global Health Research Centre for Multiple Long-Term Conditions.
This research was funded by the NIHR using UK international development funding from the UK Government to support global health research. The views expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the UK Government.

📢 New publication in BMJ Public Health
People living with multiple long-term conditions (MLTC) need more than clinical care. They need a real say in the research and services that shape their lives.
Our scoping review, “Towards meaningful engagement: theoretical approaches guiding the participation of people living with multiple long-term conditions in health research,” mapped 25 studies globally. It asked which theories, frameworks and models help engage people living with MLTC meaningfully.
➡️ 7 frameworks identified, with the Collaborative Care Model the most widely used
➡️ Engagement worked through health education, behaviour change, peer support and coordinated care
➡️ 60% of studies came from high-income countries, highlighting a clear gap for India and other LMICs
The key message is that no single framework is enough. Meaningful engagement must be co-designed with people with lived experience and rooted in local culture and health systems.
This review is part of the NIHR Global Health Research Centre for Multiple Long-Term Conditions and has informed our Community Engagement and Involvement (CEI) strategy and intervention model.

HRIDAY, Secretariat of the Healthy India Alliance/India NCD Alliance, in collaboration with consortium partners Public Health Foundation of India (@thePHFI) and the Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar (@IIPHG1), convened the Second Gujarat Multi-Stakeholder Consultation on the Impact of Extreme Heat on Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Diseases (CKMDs) on 6 October 2026 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
The consultation presented the proposed draft Gujarat Multi-Stakeholder Heat and Health Action Plan, bringing together government stakeholders, national programmes including NP-NCD and National Prog. on Climate Change and Human Health (@NPCCHH) @NCDCMoHFW , the India Meteorological Department (@Indiametdept ), State Health Systems Resource Centre-Gujarat, ICMR-National Institute of Occupational Health Research (@icmrnioh), academia, healthcare institutions, civil society, research organisations, community networks and people with lived experience.
Discussions identified five priority directions:
✅ Strengthen Convergence for Heat–Health Action: Need for convergence between NPCCHH and NP-NCD, alongside broader multi-sectoral coordination and actionable multi-stakeholder partnerships, to implement the Gujarat Heat-Health Action Plan.
✅Biometeorology for NCDs and CKMDs: Integrate IMD temperature and humidity data with daily NCD and CKMD-related hospital visits and admissions to quantify association and heat related health effects, and derive locally validated heat thresholds for strengthening health facility preparedness measures.
✅ Meaningful engagement of lived experience champions and communities: Engage people living with NCDs/CKMDs, outdoor workers and other socio-economically vulnerable groups to identify barriers to accessing heat advisories, outreach services and cooling facilities, and draw on their lived experiences to improve the accessibility and effectiveness of these interventions.
✅ Workplace safeguards backed by occupational research: Guidance from NIOH to undertake primary research on work site heat exposure and related health outcomes, using the findings to inform safeguards such as work–rest schedules, drinking water access and shaded recovery space and SOPs for heat-safe worksites.
✅ Heat exposure within NP-NCD assessment: Develop a brief assessment of occupation, workplace conditions and heat exposure for routine NP-NCD visits, connecting this information with NPCCHH guidance to inform counselling and clinical follow-up.
With an agreed framework aligned with Gujarat’s heat and health priorities, the next phase will focus on translating the Action Plan into actionable interventions, identifying implementation opportunities, clarifying institutional responsibilities, mobilising resources and establishing coordinated implementation pathways.
We look forward to advancing implementation with continued guidance and support from the Government of Gujarat.
