How to quantify maternal investment? @HuijsmansTim reports the maternal investment metric for mammalian species - derived from the allometric scaling of litter mass at weaning age by adult mass and investment duration nature.com/articles/s42003-0…
Nature's ComBio published my article on quantification of maternal investment, i.e. energy a mother invests in her offspring. It introduces a metric to compare investment across species to increase our understanding of evolutionary reproduction strategies: rdcu.be/dE6h4

Yesterday I had my graduation ceremony at the University of Ghent. I am deeply honored to have been bestowed with an award for the best master’s thesis by the faculty research commission.

#Lioness with an unknown history on the loose in #Berlin. She was hunting on a wild boar. Did she maybe survive for some time on her own? It raises many interesting questions concerning #animalwelfare, instinct, European wildlife, etc.
We, @faunawatchnl just received a permit to shelter #tortoises in addition to #turtles! Looking forward to new species and expanding our education to improve turtle and tortoise welfare.
Ducks are bred for hunters, so that they can easily shoot them 😡It’s a welfare issue and it is a risk for the spread of the influenza virus. This is happening in #Belgium. #StopHunting #Hunting #Birds
Dutch research showed that on average birds fly 10km because of their anxiety of #fireworks. Some even 500km. Negative effects can be seen days after the fireworks have been used. 😢😢

Why everyday #stress could be the key to a healthy old age theguardian.com/science/2023… A #Harvard study showed as well that the effects of stress depend on the way you perceive it. The placebo effect works on stress as well. #science
Humans have such a big impact on the biomass of mammals … unfortunately nog in a positive way.

It’s a good thing that #Bolsonaro isn’t anymore the president of #Brazil. Now the #Amazon rainforest has a chance!
