David Brooks, NY Times: "Starting in 2015, we in the Main Stream Media learned that if you bash Donald Trump, the clicks go up, the ratings go up— it became the business model.
And we get to go to sometimes off the record dinners between journalists, columnists, and politicians. And I would say over the last two years, when you were at a dinner with Democrat politicians, there was distance between the journalists and democrats.
They’re politicians, it’s our job to keep some distance. In my view, in many of the places I’ve been to, there’s no distance anymore. And that is the problem for the media. We have to establish some distance from the Democratic Party. These are people we cover, these are not people we root for. We’re not supposed to be spin doctors for them…”

It’s worth reading this brilliant article by @matthewsyed in the Sunday Times on how so many “hyperliberal” political leaders are the “true extremists of our age” and “defined by the tenets of wokeism” via net zero zealotry, trans ideology and open border illegal migration.
“I believe history will judge the likes of Cameron, Johnson, Trudeau, Hollande, Macron and von der Leyen as the most disastrous in postwar history.”
He says this as an old school liberal. He’s absolutely correct.

Bill Maher Says Muslims Are the Group He Won’t Joke About
Host: “Who are the people you can’t make jokes about?”
Bill Maher: “Muslims.”
Host: “Muslims?”
Bill Maher: “Yeah. Try that and see what your Twitter feed says.”
Host: “But that’s not saying you can’t. That just means they’ll kill you.”
Bill Maher: “Oh yes, I’ve said that.”
Host: “Theoretically, you could.”
Bill Maher: “You know, I’ve made jokes like, ‘It’s a religion of peace.’ There’s a PC over there, a PC over there and see, they’re right.”
Bill Maher jokes about why Muslims are one group he believes comedians have to be especially careful with, arguing that fear of backlash or violence can make certain subjects feel off-limits.

Multiculturalism could work, but not if one of the cultures plans to dominate all the others
And if it is also actively hostile to the parent culture
Very relevant nowadays with universities becoming ideological and averse to critical thinking
"We have a kind of fear of science and part of the reason is that science is able to show what constitutes a wrong, and unlike some other fields where no matter what you say might be right, here in science you can actually make a mistake and have to defend your view to other people who can actually draw upon facts to disprove it. So it makes some people nervous, the people who want the world to conform to their wishes rather than to the universe's own internal reality."

A Blunt Warning for Israel. This must stop.
Noone should be silent about anti-Palestinian settler terrorism in the West Bank and the nothing-much-to-see-here policy of Netanyahu. This terrorism is a menace to Palestinian lives and property, an affront to Jewish or indeed any ethics, & a stain on Israel’s reputation. Its also a direct threat to Israel’s security and statehood as a letter by top generals now attests:
“Unless arrested swiftly and decisively,” the letter bluntly warns, “escalating violence in the West Bank is poised to ignite the region and carries severe ramifications for both Israeli security and U.S. regional interests.”
Members of this govt are protecting and encourages these outrages. Its preposterous to think that a government that can assassinate a Hamas leader in a Tehran guesthouse finds itself unable to arrest a few hundred messianic paramilitaries, writes @BretStephen_NYT and i so agree

🧵After some 3 months in Europe, I'm beginning to prepare to go back home. A few thoughts as I reflect on my experience here this summer. First, American democracy is different from what exists in the #EU today, and that shouldn't surprise anyone, but should make us think. 1/10

@berlingske

This is a press release from the Danish government. For those unfamiliar with Danish politics, the Danish government is a coalition government. It is led - I almost wrote: as always - by Social Democrat Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
The press release is in Danish. I am sure you can find a translation tool that will read it for you.
But the headline reads: "Denmark and a majority of EU countries push for return hubs and reception centres outside Europe."
I come from a Danish opposition party. But now I am going to do something rather unusual. It is in the service of a higher cause.
The truth that the centre-left and left in the European Parliament cannot bear to hear - and instead label racist - is one that the Danish Social Democrats have understood. That is why they are Europe's most sensible Social Democrats. Nobody else even comes close.
The Danish Social Democrats have understood that the welfare state breaks down if a country accepts uncontrolled or near-uncontrolled immigration. They have understood that we are not merely talking about economic collapse. We are also talking about the breakdown of the social contract.
Why, ask the Danish Social Democrats, should people who have worked and paid taxes all their lives accept that people who arrived the day before yesterday can immediately draw on all the benefits that we have collectively insured ourselves against? No normal person can understand that - and nor should they be expected to.
The Danish Social Democrats also know - and vote accordingly - that it is immigrants who have a duty to integrate themselves (and preferably assimilate). They dare to say it out loud: we do not need "counter-citizens". We need fellow citizens.
And the Danish Social Democrats also dare to say openly that it is a major problem that the Muslim Brotherhood is infiltrating society. And that there are too few moderate Muslims willing to speak out against it (although, fortunately, they do exist).
My three Social Democratic colleagues in the European Parliament are among the very few normal people in Crazyville.
To all the social liberals, socialists, communists and Islamists on the Left who have cried themselves to sleep every night since we voted for the Return Regulation, I say this:
Be more like the Danish Social Democrats.
They are working for socially, economically and politically sustainable countries.
The rest of you are working for the opposite.
About our post truth world :
How are democracies supposed to survive in an age we are ufortunately compelled to call “post-truth”?
The post-truth age is not coming. It is here. It is the world we inhabit, and it poses a profound challenge to those old-fashioned people who still believe in truth (in some sense of that difficult concept).
Only a few months ago, the world said goodbye to the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas. No one did more to define the very idea of conversation as the foundation of democracy.
For Habermas, the preconditions for democratic dialogue were clear: speak truthfully, strive to be sincere, express yourself as clearly as possible, and remain within the broadly shared normative framework of society.
If I were a centrist American who carried those ideals - even unconsciously - I would be deeply depressed.
Because lies and moral transgression have conquered both major parties.
Card-carrying Republicans are expected to embrace Donald Trump’s entire catalogue of falsehoods: that he won the 2020 election, that the January 6 rioters were patriots making a polite and peaceful visit to the Capitol, and that Trump is, of course, the greatest at everything.
Card-carrying Democrats are expected to swallow an equally staggering set of lies. Above all, that men can become women (they cannot). That DEI stands for genuine diversity (it does not - it demands conformity and ideological conditioning). And that slavery and colonialism were inventions of white men.
They were not. Slavery and colonialism have existed in every corner of the world throughout human history. What Europeans - men and women - uniquely contributed was the revolutionary notion that these practices were morally wrong. And then they largely ended them.
In short, American politics is saturated with lies, regardless of which side one traditionally supports.
Post-truth is not an exclusively American phenomenon. It is simply more visible when one follows the subject closely from the outside.
Europe is full of people who swallow the Kremlin’s dishonest narrative on Ukraine. The same is true of the equally dishonest narratives about the Middle East that originate with Hamas.
It is nearly impossible to craft a philosophical definition of truth that satisfies everyone. Yet we all know what truth is: the opposite of lies and the opposite of bullshit.
That is why the time has come for those who still believe in truth - and in the norm of truthfulness - to push back.
Post-truth is, in every respect, a wretched condition for any society. It is unacceptable. Because democracy still rests, as Habermas taught us, on the simple but demanding will to speak truthfully.
