CCS is a proven failure. Watch this @FranceTVLondres segment about the dangers of carbon capture and other false solutions in the North Sea.

🚨 BREAKING: @HyNotNW is taking the UK Government to court. Why? Because they’re throwing £22 BILLION at CCS & hydrogen schemes that would lock us into more fossil fuels and impact communities. Here’s what you need to know 🧵👇 #StopHyNet hynot.uk/category/media-rele…

🚨BREAKING🚨
We and 145 other orgs have called on @Ed_Miliband to lock fossil fuel lobbyists out of the UK’s delegation to COP29
Big polluters should have no place at the year’s most critical climate talks

Nor should CCS lobbyists👇

The Gov reckons its #CCS plans are like "taking 4m cars off the road".
Wrong.
CCS plans are mostly about building 𝗻𝗲𝘄 fossil fuel infrastructure—with 2/3rds of the emissions uncapture-able upstream—so in fact it's like adding 12m cars then 𝙩𝙧𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 to take 4m away. Minimum extra 8m.

We’ll hear about carbon capture today. But don't be fooled. This is #greenwashing at an epic scale.
#CCS is a Big Oil smokescreen for launching a new wave of fossil fuel expansion.

When you think of all the humbler but far more effective green projects in desperate need of funding, it's heartbreaking to see so much frittered away on a sop to the fossil fuel industry.
Now what was that about fiscal responsibility?

Massive #LNG imports for fossil fuel based CCS which got £3.8bn in next year alone is NOT "homegrown energy" - it is gas coming from Qatar and Texas
Read the Scientists' letters, Ed, and pause and review #CCS policy. Letters:

"The settlement provides £3.9bn in 2025-26* for …carbon capture and storage clusters in the UK…the government is equipping industry with the tools they need to kick-start the CCUS and hydrogen industries "
& subsidising the FF industry.

Pumping billions into dangerous & ineffective carbon capture tech is letting the fossil fuel lobby off the hook – we should be insulating homes , installing heat pumps and transitioning to EVs , not letting big industry skirt round the real solutions to hit net zero . . .

The UK Gov's £22B carbon capture plans are mainly about building 𝗻𝗲𝘄 fossil fuel infrastructure—gas power stations and #bluehydrogen plants.
Retrofitting CCS on existing plants is a minor part.
Here's why that's terrible news for the climate👇
Letter from leading scientists calling for the Gov to halt & re-assess carbon capture plans.
We know the previous Gov was captured by Big Oil. Labour now really needs to listen to these experts.

Confused about carbon capture and storage? Not sure what blue hydrogen is? 🤔
We're curious about how well terms like these are understood so we've created a simple survey.

ALT a blue background with a white box and faces starting with a green very smiley one on the far left, then a blue smiley, a yellow neutral one, an orange sad one, and a red really sad one on the far right. Below are three different graphics of people. The first is wearing a red t-shirt, ripped blue jeans and blue shoes and is holding on the green face. The second is wearing a red t-shirt, blue trousers and has another yellow neutral face in their hand and the third is wearing a yellow dress with blue shoes and is holding the blue smiley face in their hands.

Oil company @Essar say their new blue hydrogen plant in the #Hynet cluster ‘will capture around 600,000 tonnes of CO₂’.
Here’s why that’s extraordinarily misleading:

Most shocking part of @GeorgeMonbiot article is why Labour adopted a Tory policy lock, stock &barrel👇 What pre-election deal was done on this?
We will stop CCS scheme by scheme.

Most academics I've spoken with (apart from those close to oil & gas companies) do not see the UK Govt's £22 billion CCS plan as a wise & Paris-compliant investment, yet few speak out directly. In his inimitable style @GeorgeMonbiot fills the void: theguardian.com/commentisfre…

There’s no time to dither with ineffective carbon capture technology giving polluters & big industry a free ride . We need to do more to take the fight to those intent on trashing our planet– great to be joining the Climate Emergency Fund to do just that . theguardian.com/tv-and-radio…
