🇵🇱 A major political crisis is unfolding in Poland — here's what's happening A fierce battle over the Constitutional Tribunal is underway. Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska announced the suspension of its president, Bogdan Święczkowski, and his deputy. The ousted president then reportedly tried to enter the building with representatives of right-wing opposition parties, using a crowbar and an angle grinder. Later, President Karol Nawrocki joined the confrontation after turning his plane around and cancelling a visit to Senegal. The Polish president, who took part in mass fights between football hooligans in his youth, forced his way into the Tribunal building with his security team, pushing aside even the court's new acting head, Judge Korwin-Piotrowska. The opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party called the events an attempted coup d'état. Prime Minister Donald Tusk, meanwhile, said he was restoring the rule of law after years of abuses by the previous government. The dispute over judicial appointments has been going on for a decade, dating back to when the then-ruling coalition led by Jarosław Kaczyński's party attempted to introduce reforms that drew fierce criticism both in Poland and across the EU.

A massive plume of ash rose above Mayon Volcano in the Philippines on Friday as an eruption prompted authorities to raise the volcanic alert level and order evacuations. Residents within the volcano's 3.7-mile Permanent Danger Zone were urged to evacuate immediately due to the threat of lava flows and fast-moving currents of hot gas, ash and volcanic debris.

Russia’s most powerful nuclear-powered cruiser, the Pyotr Velikiy, is to be scrapped It is the flagship of Russia’s Northern Fleet and the only operational nuclear-powered vessel of the Orlan-class project. A commission has deemed the cruiser’s repair and modernisation unfeasible. The ship has completely exhausted its service life and is beyond restoration. The cruiser was originally scheduled for modernisation after work on the Admiral Nakhimov was completed. However, repairs to the latter dragged on for eight years, during which time the Pyotr Velikiy became completely obsolete. Two other cruisers of the same class, the Admiral Ushakov and Admiral Lazarev, have already been decommissioned and are awaiting scrapping. Earlier, reports emerged that repairs to the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov had effectively been halted. The ship has been undergoing repairs since 2017, but work has virtually ground to a halt in recent months.
