I once had DND string me along on an access request, sending me emails the docs were coming, etc. I wanted to be reasonable person so I waited and waited. When I realized I was being played I filed a complaint, at Day 91, only to be told I was too late to complain. Never again.
Replying to @davidpugliese
They key to the ATIP is to complain on day 32 after you made the request to the Office of the Information Commissioner. If the department makes it to day 91 with no extension or complaint there is no actual requirement to respond to your request.

Govt released its Charter statement on Bill C-34’s under-16 social media ban. No evidence, no case law, no foreign comparisons. By pointing to less restrictive alternatives, it concedes safeguards can address the risks and makes the case against the bill.

The government has released its Charter statement for Bill C-34, the Safe Social Media Act. As expected, it's full of hand-waving with no substantial engagement with the impact on freedom of expression. justice.gc.ca/eng/csj-sjc/pl…

The Supreme Court of Canada has agreed to hear the federal government’s appeal in the Emergencies Act case. We are now gearing up to defend our historic victory for the rule of law.
This challenge was never an endorsement of the “Freedom Convoy” protests. Because of the protracted timeline and the extent of the disruption, we agreed that the police should have used ordinary laws to dismantle the blockades in February 2022.
This case is about a fundamental democratic principle: even in times of crisis, no government is above the law.
Last January, the Federal Court of Appeal agreed with the CCLA that the federal government had failed to meet the stringent legal thresholds required to invoke the Emergencies Act. When unlocked, the Act’s extraordinary powers enable Cabinet to enact wide-reaching orders without going through the ordinary democratic process.
At a time when democratic institutions and fundamental rights face growing pressure, challenging government abuse is more important than ever.
We are immensely grateful for the exceptional pro bono legal services of Ewa Krajewska, Brandon Anand Chung and Erik Arsenault of Henein Hutchison Robitaille LLP in this landmark case.

Militarised responses to the so-called ‘narco-terrorism’ have seriously violated human rights, says UN expert @profbensaul. “States must reject ‘war on narco-terrorism’ & strengthen legal frameworks to combat organised crime & drug trafficking networks.”

The limited acknowledgment by Minister Anandasangaree reflects the pressure the government has faced from thousands of participants in IJV’s letter campaign and NCCM’s and CJPME’s sustained advocacy. The minister has been compelled to respond, but has yet to correct the public record. A private assurance to one organization does not resolve the government’s public conflation of anti-Zionism with antisemitism. The report remains on the government’s website, where it states:
“Antisemitism, which includes anti-Zionism, is not always obvious,”
“Contemporary manifestations of antisemitism [include] anti-Zionism.”
Therefore, government officials and pro-Israel advocacy groups that seek to discredit Palestine solidarity can and will continue pointing to that uncorrected language as the government’s position.
The letter also leaves the central issue unresolved. Saying that not all criticism of Zionism is antisemitic does not clearly affirm that anti-Zionism is itself a legitimate political position. In fact, the letter does not address anti-Zionism at all.

Two years ago today, we started the 3 month #Abderlazik trial regarding Canada's role in the arbitrary detention and torture of Montrealer Abousfian Abdelrazik in Sudan. Still waiting for judgment. The case was launched in 2009. Victims of torture deserve prompt justice.

I look forward to presenting my new report today to the General Assembly in New York, and engaging in dialogue with UN Member States about the risks of the new “war on narco-terrorism” and the need for human rights compliant responses to organized crime and violence
NEW: I'm pleased to publish my report to the General Assembly on "Distinguishing organized crime from terrorism to protect human rights", which urges states not to conflate drug crime with terrorism or pursue illegal wars on "narco-terrorism" ohchr.org/en/documents/thema…

Canada's sanctions regime against Russia includes a comprehensive two-way arms embargo.
But Canada applies no comparable measures against Israel – even in the midst of an ongoing genocide. To the contrary, Israeli arms manufacturers like Elbit Systems are free to acquire Canadian companies whose technology can be used to entrench Israel's unlawful military occupation of Palestine.
This is yet another example of Canada failing to fulfill its obligation "not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by the continued presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory." (ICJ Advisory Opinion, July 19, 2024)
Elbit Systems has completed the acquisition of International Submarine Engineering (ISE), a Canadian company specializing in advanced autonomous underwater and remotely operated systems for the maritime domain.
Together, our combined capabilities strengthen a comprehensive maritime portfolio spanning autonomous surface and underwater platforms, mission systems, C2, sensors, communications, and electronic warfare.
The addition of ISE is expected to expand capabilities in underwater ISR, Mine Countermeasures (MCM), and Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW).

It should be illegal for Israel’s top arms producer to purchase a Canadian company.
Elbit Systems is complicit in the genocide of Palestinians.
Cancel the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement, enact sanctions and a two-way arms embargo now.

By amplifying unverified allegations from the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (@ISGAP) without proper context, the @nationalpost has failed in its obligation to maintain editorial independence and professional rigor.
ISGAP is not an impartial research institution, it rather functions as an instrument of Israeli propaganda. Investigations by The Guardian and The Forward have documented its receipt of Israeli government funding, accounting for as much as 80% of ISGAP’s annual revenue in certain years, and its connections to former Israeli officials. When a publication amplifies a heavily state-funded advocacy group targeting domestic civil rights, basic journalistic standards require full disclosure of those financial pipelines.
The report treats ordinary features of democratic participation as indicators of subversion. Canadian Muslims organizing politically, mobilizing voters, engaging elected representatives, and advocating on matters of public policy are exercising charter protected rights. Equating standard civic engagement with foreign influence does more than reflect poor analysis; it constructs a dangerous narrative that treats the lawful political participation of Canadian Muslims as inherently suspicious. This is a direct contribution to this islamophobic smear campaign.
CMPAC and the Canadian Muslim communities deserve the same standards of editorial accountability afforded to any other community in Canada. The National Post must answer for the standards applied in this reporting and the consequences of legitimizing allegations that risk stigmatizing lawful Muslim civic participation. The National Post must retract this article and apologize to the Muslim community and the organizations it smeared, amplifying questionable Islamophobic sources.
