🌿 IGBC Beyond Green A Green Building Congress 2026 Series India’s Carbon Story Will Be Written in Its Cities. 🌆 India’s cities are growing. New buildings, infrastructure, and urban systems being developed today will influence energy demand, material use, and emissions for decades to come. But the question is not whether India will build, but how it will build. According to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), buildings account for more than 30% of India’s electricity consumption. BEE has also estimated that 40% of the building stock that will exist over the next 20 years is yet to be built. This creates a significant opportunity to embed energy efficiency and sustainability into new development from the outset. But a city’s carbon footprint extends beyond its buildings. It is influenced by the materials used in construction, the energy needed for cooling, how people travel, and how water, waste and infrastructure are managed. This makes urban decarbonisation a connected challenge. Energy-efficient buildings, lower-carbon materials, sustainable mobility, circular construction and better use of existing buildings must all be part of the response. The decisions made today will shape not only how much carbon India emits, but also how its cities function, how resilient they are to climate risks, and how well they serve the people who live and work in them. 🌿 IGBC Beyond Green A Green Building Congress 2026 Series The Hidden Carbon Footprint of the Buildings Around Us.🌍 A building’s carbon footprint begins long before it is occupied and continues throughout its life. From cement and steel production to construction, cooling, maintenance and eventual demolition, emissions are embedded in the materials we choose and the way buildings are designed, built and operated. According to the United Nations Environment Programme’s Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction 2025–2026, the buildings and construction sector accounts for around 37% of global emissions and nearly 50% of global material extraction. Reducing this footprint means looking beyond energy efficiency alone. Embodied carbon calls for lower-carbon materials, resource efficiency and circular construction. Operational carbon calls for better building design, reduced energy demand, efficient systems and cleaner energy. Both matter. And many of the decisions that influence a building’s lifetime emissions are made at the design and development stage.
