पूरा ब्लॉग पढ़ें 👇 indiajusticereport.org/blog/…

🧵 4/5 @IJRranking has been voicing the need for prison reforms for a long time. As per #IJR2025 data: ▶️ India's 1,332 prisons (built to hold 4.4 lakh people) housed 5.8 lakh inmates, with 12 facilities operating at a staggering 400% capacity! ▶️ Worse still, 76% of India's prison population are undertrials, individuals awaiting trial who have not been convicted of any crime. Nearly half (49%) of these undertrials are young adults aged 18 to 30. ▶️ There has also been a 45% vacancy in correctional staff over the past decade. Against the standard guideline of 1 correctional staff member for every 200 prisoners, 1 staff member currently handles an average of 699 prisoners.

🧵 1/6 @sadafmodak writes in @IndianExpress on a critical crisis in legal aid: India provided nearly 3 lakh undertrials with free full time lawyers under LADCS. But after bar strikes over perceived client loss, @NALSALegalAid is winding down contracts, leaving undertrials stranded mid-trial.

🧵 5/6 With nearly 24 lakh criminal cases instituted monthly, experts argue LADCS handles a fraction of the docket without displacing the private bar. Scrapping the model rather than resolving procedural grievances risks leaving thousands of poor undertrials without legal representation.
