SITUATION EXPLAINED: MIT researchers got AI models to talk in "neuralese" instead of words, and it could end our best way of checking what AI is thinking.
• Normally one AI writes a summary for the next AI to read, but MIT's "Swarm Telepathy" hands over the first model's internal working memory directly
• A small translator network converts that memory between different model families, like Qwen, Llama and Gemma, without retraining either model
• It beat models talking in plain text by 40% in accuracy on average and ran about 4x faster
• It even passed image understanding from a vision model to a model that can only read text
• Chain-of-thought monitoring means reading the reasoning a model writes out in English to catch bad behavior before it acts
• In 2025, dozens of researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind warned in a joint paper that this window into AI reasoning is "fragile" and could close
• AI safety researcher @davidad predicts chain-of-thought monitoring will be "unambiguously over" by early 2028
@theojaffee: "Instead of models having a chain of thought where they write in English, they will just think in neuralese in the inscrutable matrix of floating-point numbers that make up the KV cache."

Let's take what Sam Altman is saying seriously for a second.
He says the following is within reach:
"Self-replicating data centers, this idea that you can use AI to control robots and run factories and build turbines or solar panels and build data centers. But I think we have that within grasp."
There are currently three major bottlenecks:
- Compute
- Energy
- Human labor
Sam Altman believes this triad of problems will be solved if robots build data centers, solar power or future fusion energy are used to power them, and chip production is simultaneously accelerated. It's certainly unclear whether this is being said to reassure the market and offer a positive outlook. But it would be nothing short of revolutionary if a solution to this triad were within reach, because everything depends on it.

I joined @GoogleDeepMind to develop a research program on the economics of AGI. Today, together with Andrew Koh (@andrewjkoh) and Shane Legg (@ShaneLegg), we are incredibly excited to release The Economics of Intelligence, the first in a series of projects from our group on how AGI will change the economy.
How do capability improvements transform the economy, and when? In this project, we define thresholds of economic capabilities, e.g., minimal AGI, based on how they transform the economy. We then track how the economy–market structure, employment, and wages–changes during the transition across capability regimes.
We have seen exponential increases in what AI agents can do but the broader economy seems almost remarkably unchanged. Part of the reason is that the solo AI agent is the wrong economic object; economic transformation is an equilibrium outcome where organizations compete. Looking at how intelligence functions within organizations, transformation will depend on when two key capability thresholds are crossed: competence (gains on individual skills, e.g., coding, math) and coordination (gains on ability of agents to cooperate and work together).
We show that what economic transformation looks like depends on whether AI becomes supercompetent, supercooperative, or both—the regime of artificial superintelligence (ASI). Tracking this transition shows why the real visible transformation may come from improvements in coordination—a capability most benchmarks don’t yet track. Past a certain threshold, AI capabilities can break the Coasian ceiling on firm size and lead to an economy that looks drastically different than the one we see today.
Two main takeaways:
1. To understand the path of transformation, we should be tracking agentic coordination more closely.
2. The impact of AI will likely show up in wages before market structure or employment.
We are really excited about this paper. Excited to hear people’s thoughts.
