The closer we are to NPR being fully realised, the closer we are to the real economic growth that a joined up North can bring for the entire country. Because people in Bradford and across the country cannot rely on old crumbling infrastructure anymore.

We look forward to more plans like this, but await the real progress of getting spades in the ground and beginning to bring about a transformed transport network for the North. Delays on the rail network are still just as regular, and Northerners are tired of waiting...

The North is home to 16 million people with an economy bigger than Norway or Austria - it’s only natural our mayors are out there selling it to the world together! We're sick and tired of hearing how much "potential" there is in the North. It's not potential - it's REAL! ...🧵
Why are Northern mayors on a visit to India? ITV News has been granted access to the largest trade mission to the country since the free trade agreement came into force We spoke to @bevcraig, @KiMcGuinness and @olivercoppard about their hopes for the trip

This here is devolution: Labour and Reform mayors working together, standing side by side representing the North 💪 They know their communities best, they know how to secure the deals that people would actually feel in their jobs, their wages, their high streets.

But trade deals alone won’t be enough. Government now needs to match this ambition at home with investment, and powers for mayors to invest in the homes, the transport, and town centres the north deserves. So we look forward to seeing what is announced at Budget!

Great to speak to Naga & Charlie on BBC Breakfast this morning about @MartinSLewis’s new Small Ideas Initiative. Small ideas can make big improvements to our lives, show government at all levels listens & build trust that politics can deliver. Fab idea!
NEWS: Today I’m launching The Small Ideas Initiative. We want you to submit ideas at Small-Ideas.org for non-controversial fixes, e.g “live sewage updates for beaches” or “standardised allergen menus”. A year ago, an interviewer asked what I’d have told the Government if I’d been advising it, I replied, 'Come up with 100 small things that piss people off and fix one a day for the first 100 days'. As I left the stage, I emailed myself, 'set up Small ideas institute!' And today, I’m excited it's happening. I’m funding two charities to work together to collate the submissions, narrow them down to about 200 doables then turn those into formal policy proposals which I'll bring back to you for feedback. Then to finish we've a Cross-Party panel who’ve agreed to pick 50ish, after which we’ll start trying to make them happen. You can read far more about it and who the cross party panel are here… blog.moneysavingexpert.com/2…

🏘️High streets are more than just places to shop: they’re spaces to bump into people, grab a pint, use the library. As we moved shopping online, our town centres – and therefore our communities – have taken the brunt, with empty boarded up lots slowly killing that local buzz...

...highlighting how these spaces have declined, and exactly how we can bring them back to life. Cos this is about pride in the places we call home. Thriving high streets must no longer be a privilege for wealthier areas, but a RIGHT for everyone, north, south, rural, coastal.

Why are the Right trying to stop people from joining the army? 🇬🇧🪖 Soldiers, sailors and airmen are disproportionately white, working-class men. But are they now turning against the military? Who is behind it? Why is it gaining traction? And what can be done about it? 🧵👇

It has long made little sense for local economies to be led by Whitehall, when local people and mayors know best what their areas need, and how young people can help bring that future forward. …🧵

Reindustrialisation and devolution are core to bringing growth to the north once more. So it is absolutely right the chancellor is focussing the government’s efforts to get NEETS and young people into work with help of Mayors and local apprenticeship programmes 💼 …🧵2/3

BUT - people across the country are feeling the squeeze, and speeches at conferences won’t quell anxieties about work or money here and now. The chancellor and government must move quickly to help make that hope tangible for the north, England, the UK.
