Seven years ago today, Iraq’s Tishreen protests entered a new phase, becoming one of the most important popular uprisings in the country's modern history. What began as protests against corruption, unemployment, and failing public services quickly evolved into something much bigger: a rejection of Iranian influence and the political system that has kept Iraq behind many of its neighbors. And that is precisely what made Tishreen so dangerous to the Iranian regime. These were not political elites, Western-funded organizations, or opposition figures that Tehran could easily dismiss as American or Gulf proxies. These were ordinary Iraqis, many from the Shia-majority south, demanding their country back. It is much harder to dismiss a movement as a foreign conspiracy when the people challenging you come from the very communities you claim to represent. Hundreds of Iraqis lost their lives demanding a better future. Their courage and their stories should never be forgotten. At @IdeasB2, we want to highlight more of these voices and tell the stories of ordinary people challenging the forces holding their countries back. If you believe these voices deserve to be heard, please support our work by subscribing and sharing. themiddleeastuncovered.com/

Maryam* teaches girls in secret in Afghanistan. When there’s a risk of a Taliban raid, she has to burn their lesson materials and erase any trace of the classroom. “If we stop, these girls will have nothing,” one of her fellow teachers told us. *Name changed for her safety.

Pezeshkian held up photos of Iranian children killed in foreign attacks and spoke of “our innocent people.” What about the Iranians killed by his own government? Their families are still waiting for justice.

Rojin trained for a year and a half to become a freelance programmer. Then Iran’s internet shutdown cut her off just as she was ready to begin. For millions of Iranians, getting online is how they find customers and earn a living. @Soranmansournia reports on what happens when the state takes that away. themiddleeastuncovered.com/p…

Peace is tied to practical things: whether people can learn, find reliable information, build a livelihood, and shape their own future. For the International Day of Peace, we’re looking at the people doing that work across the Middle East and Afghanistan. ideasbeyondborders.org/the-w…

More than 46,000 people went to Abu Dhabi's Comic Con last year. This year's event sold out before it even opened. A generation ago, some of the people now at the center of that scene were the “weird” kids for liking anime and gaming. How that happened is a much bigger story than cosplay. 👇 themiddleeastuncovered.com/p…

Tunisia grows ingredients used in beauty products around the world. So why shouldn’t more of those products be made in Tunisia too? That’s part of what drove chemist Nesrine Abdellatif to build BiotyNess, a homegrown skincare company. Her path there was anything but straightforward. Our team at @MEastUncovered tells her story 👇

Twenty-five years after 9/11, IBB President @faisalalmutar reflects on growing up in Iraq through the wars that followed, and the lesson that helped shape our work today: fighting extremism is only part of the job. We also have to invest in the people building what comes next.
Twenty-five years after September 11, we owe the victims more than remembrance. We also owe ourselves an honest accounting of what followed, and what our responsibility is moving forward. Read @faisalalmutar's reflections 25 years after 9/11—and what he believes should come next: themiddleeastuncovered.com/p…

This started with a Beirut gallery giving displaced artists somewhere to work. It grew into an exhibition bringing together 17 artists from across Lebanon.
At No Chef in the Kitchen in Saifi, displaced artists from the south, the Beqaa, and Beirut came together around one question: what brings us together when everything around us is pulling us apart? @rayanne_tawil reports from the exhibit:

If the world is getting better in important ways, would we even know it? @FaisalAlMutar asked @sapinker about the state of the world when they sat down in New York this week. His answer was a reminder that crises make headlines. Progress usually happens too slowly to become breaking news.

The camps holding ISIS families are closing. But what happens to the children who grew up in them? Many still have no citizenship or legal identity. Some have spent most of their lives in limbo. Hollie McKay reports for @MEastUncovered.

During the war in Lebanon, a Beirut gallery became an open studio for artists displaced from the south. Then something unexpected happened. Artists from Beirut and the Beqaa began joining them. Now, 17 artists are exhibiting together in the same space. The story of “Under One Sky,” from @MEastUncovered > open.substack.com/pub/middle…
