If you've ever wondered why smart TVs are so cheap, this is why. @log4j rooted his Samsung and found an always-on hot mic, automatic content recognition, geolocation, network mapping, ad targeting and user profiling, shared with Samsung's "400 partners". A lot of it can be blocked in <15 min, wrote a basic guide below. What your TV is doing The main culprit is ACR (automatic content recognition). Your TV screenshots what's on screen, fingerprints it, and sends it home to build your ad profile. Samsung does it every 500ms, LG every 10ms [1]. What is insane: it happens on connected devices too. Plug in your laptop, your console, your work machine, and your TV can fingerprint that via HDMI [1]. He also found that if your Samsung doesn't have a mic, it'll look for one from a connected soundbar or bluetooth device. xitter.cf/log4j/status/211376224… It's on by default, and you likely agreed to it on the setup screen you clicked through in 10 seconds. Step 1: Turn off ACR Samsung: Terms & Privacy → Viewing Information Services LG: Live Plus Vizio: Viewing Data Roku: "Use info from TV inputs" Sony/Google TV: Samba Interactive TV Menus vary by model, but those are the names to look for. While you're in there, opt out of interest-based ads, reset your advertising ID, decline every optional privacy agreement, turn off voice recognition, and delete apps you never open. Step 2: Give smart devices their own network Put the TV, cameras, speakers and vacuum on your router's guest/IoT network. The logic is simple: these devices rarely get patched. If one gets compromised (getting drastically more frequent with AI), it shouldn't be able to see your other devices or home network. Step 3: Block trackers for the whole house with DNS-level filtering NextDNS (cloud-based) is easy and has a solid free plan. Pi-hole is a little bit more work if you prefer self hosting. For simplicity we'll focus on the former. 1. Sign up at nextdns.io (free tier is plenty) 2. Privacy tab: add a blocklist (OISD is a good bet) and turn on Native Tracking Protection for Samsung, LG, Roku, Amazon (see attached image) 3. Setup tab: copy your endpoint 4. Paste it into your router's DNS settings as DNS-over-HTTPS/TLS (or use the IPs + "Link IP" if your router only does plain DNS) 5. Bonus: block outbound port 53 except to your router. Some devices hardcode their own DNS to get around you Then open the NextDNS logs and watch how often your TV phones home. It's eye-opening. If an app or update breaks, find the domain in the logs and allowlist it. Why they do this TV prices are down 97% since 2000 [2]. Most of that is better manufacturing and brutal competition. But once margins on the hardware hit zero, the cost moved to you. In Q3 2024, Vizio lost $6.7M selling TVs and made $115.8M in gross profit from ads and viewing data [3]. They've said on earnings calls that they keep TV prices low to grow the audience they sell to advertisers. Walmart bought them in 2024. This isn't a conspiracy theory either. Vizio paid $2.2M to the FTC in 2017 for tracking 11 million TVs without consent. Last December, Texas sued Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense and TCL over ACR. Samsung and LG have since agreed to stop collecting that data without explicit consent [4]. TL;DR 1. ACR off 2. Ads + voice off 3. Smart devices on their own network 4. NextDNS filtering on the router Sources: [1] ACR study: arxiv.org/abs/2409.06203 [2] Cost of US consumer goods: aei.org/economics/chart-of-t… [3] Vizio Q3 2024: sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/… [4] Texas v. Samsung: texasattorneygeneral.gov/new…

Today, I wanted to know how much money I've spent, so I vibe-coded a financial report that connects to all of my accounts. Since my wife wanted to see the report, I also vibe-coded a messaging app and sent her the PDF. Before opening the file, she vibe-coded a PDF viewer and made it run on her vibe-coded operating system. I think we did a great job, so I'm now vibe-coding a GitHub clone to share the code and prompts we used. I hope you vibe-code a browser to download it all when ready.

Horrified to learn that @academia has added an AI model which trains itself off of scientists' work and offers its services back to us as a "co-scientist". I will be deleting all of my work from academia.edu and remaining on researchgate. This is inexcusable.

I don't get it, man. If AI is the future we’re being pushed towards, what happens if it replaces jobs faster than we can create meaningful work? Businesses can reduce their dependence on workers, cool. But how do they reduce their dependence on paying customers??? Because there will be less of those. If these supervillains can produce more wealth with less human labour, at what point do we rethink a society where people must earn a living, but have fewer ways to do so? Young people also face the prospect of automation taking both the entry-level jobs that give them a start and the professional careers we BEEN telling them to study for. What advice do we give them when “get an education” and “work your way up” become increasingly uncertain routes to security? What the fuck happens when millions are too expensive to employ and too poor to participate? How long can a society demand that folks earn their place while eliminating every way to do it????

270 cars across four German states. Exhaust pipes filled with construction foam. “Be greener” stickers slapped on the windows with Robert Habeck’s face. It looked like radical climate activism. Russia ran the operation. Three defendants confessed in Ulm. Two men, 18 and 22, one woman, 21. They moved to Germany from Bosnia, Serbia, and Romania. Moscow’s handlers paid them 100 euros per car to frame the Green Party and discredit climate policy before the Bundestag election. The court called them “disposable agents. ” Accurate. Now the sentence: • Two men: 3,000 euros each to the state treasury • Woman: 50 hours of community service • All three sentenced under juvenile law A foreign intelligence service coordinated 270 acts of sabotage at that price. No prison. No asset seizure. No investigation into the network that recruited them, moved them, and paid them. The message to Moscow is unambiguous: this is cheap. A few thousand euros in fines, some community service, and the operation still achieved its goal. The Greens were smeared, the public was confused, and the actual perpetrators walk away with a court record and a fine they can pay off with the next job. Russia needs the cost of sabotage to stay low enough that recruitment never stops, making court victories unnecessary. This verdict guarantees the next wave will be bigger. Ten times bigger is a conservative estimate. The German legal system just set the market rate for Russian hybrid warfare on German soil: 100 euros per car for the saboteur, 3,000 euros per saboteur for the state. Moscow will pay that all day.

Hello, my name is Annie Altman. My father, Jerry Altman, lived from October 4, 1950 until May 25, 2018. He loved sports, music, thrift shopping, and seeing his loved ones happy. I often wished and asked for him to be retired, especially due to his known heart conditions. Instead he died at age 67, while working more than overtime hours, including overnight road trips between St. Louis and Kansas City. After my Dad’s death in 2018, his assets were supposed to fund a trust for my benefit. Instead, my “family” did nothing to fulfill his wishes and hid the existence of the trust from me. You can find a history of his estate in the court file and see for yourself their inaction on: ww.courts.mo.gov/casenet/ Case Number: 25SL-PR02320 In the time without the support my Dad intended for me, I was homeless for more than three years, began survival sex work, and managed Elhers-Danlos Syndrome, PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), and more. In 2024, St. Louis attorney Mike Gras helped show that the Trust did exist and I now receive monthly payments for my basic needs. These payments, that my Father intended for me to have after his death in 2018, allowed me to: finally have stable housing again after a 2021 home invasion, slowly stop the sex work I had begun for survival, and finally get major ankle surgery after seven straight years (and 12 years since the first walking boot) of pain. I am sharing this from my fourth week of recovery from said ankle surgery, where scar and other tissues were removed and an internal support was attached to my bones. The Trust is currently being managed by Parkside Financial Bank & Trust in St. Louis. I have not received all of the information I am entitled to about the assets in the trust, especially concerning my siblings' company Hydrazine. Hydrazine is a company founded by my eldest sibling Sam, and my other siblings Max and Jack have been employees of Hydrazine, all of whom I went no contact with in 2020. I filed a lawsuit in St. Louis County for their failure to fulfill my father's wishes, which can be found here: courts.mo.gov/fv/c/Petition.… Lawyers specialized in this kind of trust litigation require upfront retainers that are out of my capacity to afford. The court denied my request for the trust to cover my legal fees, so here I am. Thank you for helping me protect my Dad's wishes and legacy.

Annie is wearing her dad’s fleece. Jerry Altman had a known heart condition, but was overworking. Annie pleaded Sam to help their father’s retire. Sam never did. Then their father died of heart failure. Jerry left a trust to support Annie if she struggled with income. Sam colluded to hide the trust from Annie. Then they blocked access for years. Annie became homeless, struggled with severe health issues, and had to turn to sex work. This is all covered in the *second* lawsuit. Which btw, needs funds because Annie’s previous lawyers all left, and she had to get new ones. Please help get the story out xitter.cf/anniealtman108/status/…
