In 1966, Alaska Native leaders came together from different regions, speaking different languages and facing different challenges. But they united around the lands and traditions that had sustained their people for countless generations. Six decades later, we gathered at the annual Alaska Federation of Natives Convention with friends, leaders, elders, and young people from across Alaska, celebrating what happens when people come together and build a stronger future for their communities. Gunalchéesh for the opportunity to listen, learn, and continue working alongside Alaska Native leaders on the issues that matter most.

As Chairman of the @IndianCommittee, I recently hosted a congressional staff briefing with Vice Chair @SenBrianSchatz to discuss our legislation – the Native Children's Commission Implementation Act. The briefing brought together Tribal leaders, Native youth, Commissioners, advocates, and partners from across the country, highlighting broad support of the bill and its eight titles, and urging Congress to support the lasting change it seeks to achieve. Quyana to everyone who took part in this meaningful event. Your leadership and stories continue to remind us that culture heals, Tribal self-determination strengthens communities, and Native children and families must remain a top priority. Introducing the bill was an important milestone, but our work is just beginning. Together, let’s get this legislation signed into law.

The strongest policies are shaped by the people they're meant to serve. That's exactly what guided the Native Children's Commission Implementation Act, which I'm proud to have introduced to turn the findings and recommendations of the Alyce Spotted Bear and Walter Soboleff Commission on Native Children into meaningful federal action. The Commission spent years listening to Native youth, families, Tribal leaders, educators, and service providers across Indian Country. Its final report made clear that Native children continue to face unacceptable disparities, but also that Tribes know what works when they are empowered to lead.
