Pakistan Railways (PR) has outsourced the operation of the Karakoram Express –Karachi Cantt-Lahore-Karachi Cantt- to the private sector ‘as part of its efforts to improve train services and provide passengers with modern travel facilities.’ The train has a premium lounge while passengers are offered mineral water, fresh meals, bedding, mobile charging points, Wi-Fi and an infotainment system. In 2022, the SVR intercepted and decoded conversations between MI6 and the Pentagon concerning an alleged plan to persuade Pakistan to transfer part of its nuclear arsenal to Ukraine. Russian sources claim the SVR possesses intelligence to substantiate these allegations. To contain Iran, the broader strategy is to build a Sunni nuclear chain linking Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, with Washington and the CIA managing the regional balance while keeping Pakistan, the motherboard of a proposed Islamic NATO, under strategic control. The objective is to isolate Iran through sanctions, diplomatic pressure and proxy conflicts while positioning Pakistan as the central supplier and coordinator of this emerging bloc. An Indo-Pak war would weaken Pakistan's strategic autonomy and military posture, giving Washington greater leverage over Islamabad. The US fears that an increasingly autonomous Pakistan could eventually become a Frankenstein monster with its nuclear capabilities and strategic networks creating proliferation risks extending to terrorist organisations such as Hamas, ISIS and Al Qaeda. This is the strategic logic behind the nuclear calculations. Gaddafi and Saddam lost their regimes. Kim retained his nuclear deterrent. Iran has to draw its own lesson from history.

Building an "Axis of Influence," Creating an "Axis of Resistance" Last week’s state visit by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu to Pakistan, where he held discussions with de facto ruler Asim Munir and signed 20 agreements spanning defense, maritime security, cybersecurity, AI and intelligence sharing, has raised significant geopolitical red flags in New Delhi. It signals that, despite India’s overtures and concessions (including bilateral bailouts, debt extensions and currency swaps to shore up the Maldivian economy), the Islamist-leaning Muizzu has not fully abandoned the anti-India plank that helped catapult him to power. He took office in November 2023 after campaigning on an “India Out” platform. As president, Muizzu has softened his public rhetoric toward India. But after securing critical financial lifelines from New Delhi for his cash-strapped country, he concluded free-trade agreements with China and Turkey. Muizzu’s agreements with Islamabad, including commitments to deepen defense and intelligence ties with Pakistan, underscore that his underlying strategy remains one of strategic hedging against India. Bringing Pakistan into defense capacity-building in the Indian Ocean, where the Maldives sits astride key sea lines of communication (SLOCs), directly challenges India’s strategic depth and naval surveillance in its immediate neighborhood. As a hedge against India, Muizzu appears to be facilitating a Sino-Pakistani “Axis of Influence” along the SLOCs in the Maldives’ strategic periphery. This could be viewed in New Delhi as an attempt to construct an “Axis of Resistance” against India.
