Honoured to attend the commemorations of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution in Budapest.
70 years ago, Hungarians rose up against oppression.
They fought for freedom, democracy and justice.
The very values at the heart of Europe today.
Their courage lives on.

Today, October 23, 2026, we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
Seventy years ago, on the streets of Budapest, ordinary people did something extraordinary.
They stood up against a dictatorship. They challenged an empire. And they dared to demand something that should never have to be demanded: the right to live in freedom, dignity, and peace.
They were students, workers, teachers, parents, and children. They were not an army. They did not possess the weapons or the resources of a superpower. What they possessed was something far more powerful: the conviction that their country belonged to its people, not to those who ruled it through fear.
On October 23, 1956, peaceful demonstrations grew into a nationwide uprising against Soviet domination and communist oppression. The Hungarian people demanded free elections, freedom of speech, national independence, and the withdrawal of Soviet troops.
For a brief, extraordinary moment, freedom seemed within reach.
But on November 4, Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest. The revolution was crushed by overwhelming military force. Thousands lost their lives, countless families were torn apart, and approximately 200,000 Hungarians were forced to flee their homeland.
The world watched. And despite expressions of sympathy, the Hungarian people were ultimately left to face the Soviet military alone.
Yet there is something profoundly important about what happened in 1956.
The revolution was defeated militarily, but its ideals were never defeated.
The Soviet Union could occupy Hungary. It could imprison its citizens, execute its revolutionaries, and silence its political opponents. But it could never erase the memory of those who had stood against it.
That memory survived in whispered conversations, in families, in exile, and in the hearts of generations who refused to forget.
And thirty-three years later, in 1989, Hungary finally emerged from communist dictatorship.
Today, seventy years after those first demonstrations, we honour not only those who fought and died, but also those who survived, those who suffered imprisonment and persecution, and those who lost everything simply because they refused to surrender their dignity.
But remembrance must be more than ceremony.
The lesson of 1956 is not merely that freedom is precious. It is that freedom is fragile. That independence cannot be taken for granted. That no nation should have the right to determine another nation’s destiny through military force.
And above all, that patriotism is not blind obedience to those in power. Sometimes, the greatest act of love for one’s country is to stand against those who claim to speak in its name.
The heroes of 1956 did not fight so that one form of unquestionable authority could simply replace another. They fought for the right to think freely, to speak openly, to choose their own leaders, and to determine their own future.
Their courage belongs to history, but their message belongs to every generation.
Freedom is not a gift from the powerful. It is a right that belongs to every human being.
Seventy years have passed. The streets have changed. Generations have come and gone. But the courage of those young Hungarians still speaks to us today.
It reminds us that even when the odds seem impossible, standing up for what is right is never meaningless.
Today, we remember those who gave their lives for a free Hungary.
We remember those who never returned home.
We remember those whose names history has forgotten, but whose sacrifices helped shape the future of our nation.
And we remember that the true legacy of 1956 is not simply the tragedy of a revolution crushed, but the extraordinary courage of a people who refused to accept that tyranny was their destiny.
Glory to the heroes of 1956.
May their courage never be forgotten, their sacrifice never be diminished, and the freedom they fought for never again be taken for granted.
Long live a free Hungary.
Éljen a szabad Magyarország!

Dr. Karl Deisseroth spent hours fielding congratulatory calls after learning early Monday that he had won a Nobel Prize.
Deisseroth, 54, shared this year’s medicine prize with two researchers in Germany for their work in optogenetics, a field that combines light with genes to switch on and off neurons in living brains.

If you are a lab researcher, I urge you to consider what the next few years will actually feel like. Do you want to kick off a superintelligent RL run without a rigorous understanding of its mind? Should you put your head down because “it’s happening anyway” - or take this moment to call for different conditions?

Hungary welcomes the Ukrainian parliament’s declaration condemning Soviet authorities' coercive measures against the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia between 1944 and 1946. The declaration is a fitting tribute to the thousands of victims of deportation and forced labor targeted by Soviet terror on account of their Hungarian identity. Hungary stands ready to continue uncovering the truth about the past and honor the memory of the victims.
