Lula’s win is extraordinary not only because of the 10 million more voters he managed to turn out, but also for the fact that it defied the Trump administration, which obviously wanted the 80-year old leftist gone and, according to reports, tried to tip the scales in Bolsonaro’s favor with sanctions on individual jurists, tariffs on the Brazilian economy and FTO designations on the country’s two biggest criminal groups.
It didn’t work. In fact, it played to Lula’s advantage. Trump will eventually shrug this off but it’s clearly not the outcome he wanted.
