"A lot of managers talk about a really defined process and the five factors of security selection they evaluate, but it’s a lot squishier than that. Maybe 20% of the ideas fit into this lovely definition." - Joshua Fenton (EP.401) With thanks to @iconnections_io & @srsacquiom.

If I were an LP of a fund whose manager thought it a good ROI to respond, through social media, to nearly every slight, and insist that his opinion be heard daily on nearly every topic, my redemption letter would have arrived yesterday.

Just finished (re)reading The Autobiography of Charles Darwin. Love this passage about how he fends off confirmation bias: "I had, also, during many years, followed a golden rule, namely, that whenever a published fact, a new observation or thought came across me, which was opposed to my general results, to make a memorandum of it without fail and at once; for I had found by experience that such facts and thoughts were far more apt to escape from the memory than favourable ones. Owing to this habit, very few objections were raised against my views which I had not at least noticed and attempted to answer."

There is definitely a difference between a CIO organizational role and a CIO investing role. In the organizational CIO world, you have meetings, comp, HR, hiring, culture, roles & responsibilities, media relations, marketing, constituent engagement, asset class setup, strategy of all sorts, and physical office space and setup. I may have forgotten a few. If you’re calling investing plays, then the CIO asset class strategy of the organizational world is buttressed by an “on the ground” knowledge of markets, dislocations, opportunities, without having to convince an asset class head to invest in a particular direction. The bigger the investing team, the more all encompassing the organizational role is. The smaller the investment team, the more nimble and active the portfolio is able to be. The above should argue for as lean an office as possible while enabling the team to generally operate at 85% capacity (see prior post).

MAGIC!!! I mean this borders on ethics violation, no? Selling people PE and private real estate as being single digit vol? Private credit is like a 4 vol here. (red lines are mine)

The performance of active funds is inherently cyclical, which gives investors every tempation to invest in the wrong things at a terrible time.

Interesting piece on #AI and its ability to read SEC filings correctly. So much unstructured info in the filings that even after 20 years, I'm often surprised by what/where I find things. cnbc.com/2023/12/19/gpt-and-…

Our obsession with being informed makes it hard to think long-term. We spend hours consuming news because we want to be informed. The problem is, the news doesn’t make us informed – quite the opposite. The more news we consume, the more misinformed we become.

Do fees still do a good job of predicting performance differences between funds (in this case returns vs. the peer group average over rolling three-year periods)? Short answer -- appears so. This covers all shareclasses of all US mutual funds/ETFs over 10 years ended 10/31/23.

This post makes me think about the Pabrai/Munger anecdote about Capital Group having a "best ideas" portfolio that underperformed meaningfully. The reason for the underperformance was that: - The "highest conviction" names were usually the names analysts spent the most time on - The names were chosen by sector specialists, so ideas were the "relative" best, put perhaps pitched at a time when the whole sector was unattractive. h/t @MohnishPabrai afr.com/markets/why-investor…
