New podcast on the attempt by the British government to impose conscription on Ireland in April 1918. The mass mobilisation against conscription prefigured the victory of Sinn Fein in the election of that year. With @historian1914 & @manofnoproperty theirishstory.com/2026/10/26…

Today in Irish History – First Day of the 1641 Rebellion, October 23. One of the most tragic days in Irish history. What was intended to be a bloodles coup d'etat devolved into a series of reciprocal massacres between Catholics and Protestants theirishstory.com/2010/10/23…

My article for @theirishstory is now up. It looks at what Wolfe Tone's little-known 1788 proposal for a British military colony in the Sandwich Islands and what its revival in 1790 reveals about the rapid, though uneven, development of his political thought.
Very intereesting new article on the site by @irvine1798 on how Wolfe Tone, the father of Irish republicanism, once advoated for a British miltiary colony in the Sandwich Islands. theirishstory.com/2026/10/23…

Very interesting new article by Barry Sheppard on the #Lurgan weavers' strike of 1913. Wages had not increased since 1886, & weavers who were noted to be living just on the right side of starvation, struck for better pay to keep up with cost of living. theirishstory.com/2026/10/19…

Very interesting new article by @rea_esten on those unwillingly transported from Dublin's quays in the 1700s: 'pressed' into naval service, 'transported' to penal servitude, sold into indentured labour or just kidnapped. theirishstory.com/2026/10/13…
