the uk government's plan for growth, as far as i can tell:
> punish people who start businesses
> punish people who provide homes to rent
> punish people who earn over £100k
> punish people who buy nice houses
> write to people who build wealth asking what they own
then hold a review into why nothing is growing.

75% of constituencies in England and Wales spend more on welfare than their workers pay in income tax and National Insurance. London and the South East are the only regions that are net contributors; the North East is the most welfare-dependent region in England.

Best description I've heard of Labour's tax on private schools:
"A tax that raises less than it costs isn’t a tax.
It’s spite with a spreadsheet.
Aimed at the parents who sacrificed, and dressed up as fairness."

🆘 ⚠️ The foundations of the British economy are already shaking.
House prices are falling. Mortgage approvals are collapsing. Small businesses are disappearing. Families face falling real incomes and energy bills they cannot control.
The @bankofengland knows all this. Its own report records the weakening housing market, declining mortgage demand and tighter credit for SMEs.
Yet it has arrived with a crane and swung a wrecking ball into the building. Higher rates mean larger mortgages, falling property values, more arrears and repossessions, weaker investment, business failures and greater pressure on renters.
The Bank calls this “restrictive monetary policy”.
In plain English, it is deliberate destruction: making people poorer until they can no longer afford their mortgage!
The inflation is being driven principally by war and imported energy, not a British spending boom.
Calling this a cure is dishonest. It is an aggressive monetary intervention whose destructive consequences are known in advance.
When the foundations are shaking, responsible authorities reinforce the building. They do not attack it with a wrecking ball.

It's so obvious this is deliberate.
Why do they keep doing it?

The number of businesses in Britain has fallen by 104,000 since 2025, taking the total down to 5.6m, government figures have revealed.
The main contributor to the decline was the loss of 157,000 self-employed people. It's not surprising that the self-employed are quitting in droves. The mad "Making Tax Difficult" requirement to force them to file tax returns five times a year has pushed out many.
The upcoming requirement to pay tax early will make cash flow very challenging and force many more self-employed out of the market.

Labour's new 'founder relief' is basically a scam. The rules are so tight that even most successful fast-growing tech companies wouldn't qualify, reports @CityAM.
A claimant must have:
- held at least 25% of the ordinary shares and votes when trading, or preparations for it, began
- held them for five years,
- been a UK resident for five continuous tax years.
Their company needs £10m of turnover and 15 full-time staff, and pass two of three tests: 25% compound annual growth over three years in turnover, the same in headcount, or recent R&D relief claims on £1.5m of spending.
"Anthropic had seven co-founders with near-equal shares, so none held the required 25% at the outset. In fact, since no more than four people can each own a quarter of anything, no company can ever have more than four deserving founders", notes @grice_maisie. OpenAI also would not have qualified nor would Deepmind.
"Founders who had the foresight to pivot into better opportunities may also be undeserving, as the relief requires ‘no major change in the nature of the trade’. Hugging Face, which Nvidia has reportedly agreed to buy for $12.9bn, started life as a chatbot app for teenagers. It shut the app down to build the platform where AI developers share their models".
Maybe there is one particular company that Healey had in mind when designing this very narrow relief. But which one is it and why?
