I spent my summer immersed in the 180-year history of juvenile detention and incarceration in Allegheny County. It is, at turns, fascinating and frustrating, heartbreaking and, sometimes, even hopeful.

Working on this weekâs Pittsburgh City Council story, and it remains baffling to me that, as far as I can tell, @informuppgh is the only outlet to report the cityâs presumed $1 million loss from the NFL Draft.
Theyâre not satisfiedânor should they beâby press briefing coverage in legacy publications. (And thatâs if theyâre not in a news desert.) Itâs absolutely maddening to have the information to give and not be able to get it out there.
At the end of tonightâs meeting, Council Member DeWitt Walton called for a vote for a new president [in the weedsâit has to wait until the next meeting] and then called for Catenaâs resignation. Meeting adjourned.
Almost 2 dozen members of the community are present ahead of tonightâs Allegheny County Council meeting calling for President Pat Catena to step down @TribLIVE

The @washingtonpost layoffs disproportionately affected union members of color, per data from the @postguild.
50% of Hispanic/Latino guild members, 45% of Black members, and 43% of Asian members were laid off, compared to 37% of white members.

Okay, can we please talk about how this tidbit about Pittsburgh police using this sweeping surveillance software for the past seven years came up in a brief discussion about an invoice and then everyone just moved along? informup.org/police-surveillâŚ
Re UPMCâs money to the city toward ambulances. IIRC, when @Barb4PGH? @DebGrosspgh? asked about the possibility last year, she was dismissed because it wasnât allowed. What changed? Was it a matter of donating actual ambulances vs. donating money toward them?

always bears repeating that this is NOT ultimately a financial decision. jeff bezos is worth over 250 billion dollars. he can afford to lose many millions and never even notice it. this is, at its core, a political and personal decision by bezos to destroy the post
The ones they promised as part of their tax break from the county?

Mayor of Pittsburgh Corey OâConnor said in his inaugural address, âPublic safety is not a statistic. Itâs how you feel when walking down the street.â Horrific.
Public safety isnât dictated by your feelings. and policy shouldnât be crafted by unfounded paranoia and fear.

You would think the council budget director saying, "We literally can't afford to pay [the water bill]," would be a bigger story?
City Unable to pay ~$5 million water bill and the proposed 2026 budget does not include enough money to cover the city's projected spending, let alone the overdue bills.
