"Want a sober reminder of where we are in addressing the climate crisis....???? Over the last 50 years, the oil & gas industry has made $3 billion in profits every day......$52 trillion in pure profit. It's a capitalist disease that has been on a mission to wipe out our planet.

***EXTREME WARNING*** Red Alert: Planet in Peril‼️ The report reveals that 2023 was the warmest year on record, with global temperatures reaching 1.45°C above pre-industrial levels, effectively crossing the 1.5°C threshold that was considered a critical limit. All climate indicators, including greenhouse gas concentrations, ocean temperatures, sea level rise, glacier melt, and extreme weather events, broke previous records and showed accelerating rates of change. A major concern highlighted is the unprecedented rate of increase in atmospheric CO₂ levels, which has doubled in the past 15 years compared to the previous decade. Methane and nitrous oxide levels also reached new highs, with methane increasing by a staggering 264% compared to pre-industrial levels. The report emphasizes that these indicators are not just breaking records but also increasing at record rates, signaling a dire emergency that scientists are struggling to explain fully. The need for governments and corporations to wake up to the reality of accelerating climate change and take urgent action is highlighted. The report also touches on the sociological impacts, such as internal displacement of people due to climate stresses, food insecurity, and the potential for geopolitical instability as a result of these factors. Overall, the WMO report serves as a stark warning about the rapidly deteriorating state of the planet's climate system, with all indicators pointing towards a worsening crisis that requires immediate and comprehensive action from all stakeholders. I urge all climate scientists and politicians to read this article by @jonathonporritt jonathonporritt.com/mainstre… Quoting his summary points: 1️⃣"The speed with which the climate is now changing is faster than (almost) all scientists thought possible." 🧵1/6 teapaw.org/hausfath/status/…
The first global temperature data is in for the full month of September. This month was, in my professional opinion as a climate scientist – absolutely gobsmackingly bananas. JRA-55 beat the prior monthly record by over 0.5C, and was around 1.8C warmer than preindutrial levels.

“The creation of corporations was one of the biggest self-annihilation moves of human civilisation. These are entities which exploit humans and the Earth, and which are governed not by humans or ethics, but by profit. Humanity is essentially owned by something abstract and inhuman, and this should be of grave concern to all of us” #Economics #ecology #socialism #Degrowth #ClimateAction

Here’s another from @exxonmobil 1982. It predicted that in 2023, our atmospheric CO2 would reach roughly 415 parts per million, raising the global average surface temperature ~1.1 degrees C. Update: Average CO2 in 2023 was just over 420 PPM and the average temp anomaly 1.18C 2/

That such a brutal conflict has been allowed to continue and for this long – despite the widespread condemnation, the physical and mental toll and the massive destruction – is an indelible stain on our collective conscience.
