Always the same “joke” - it never seems to get old to them. In case you forgot, smell—and the way we talk about it—is deeply political.
Seriously
Mo'Nique won an Oscar for "Precious." She was paid $50,000. The film made $63.6 million.
Then she refused to promote it for free. She says she was blackballed for it.
In the video below, she explains who asked her to work for nothing, and what they said when she asked to be paid.
She never complained about the $50,000. "That's what I signed up for. It was an independent film."
She finished her promotion in the US. Then Lionsgate asked her to fly to Cannes. She said no.
They offered another week in France and a better room. Her husband asked if there was a dollar amount. The answer: "We will never pay anyone to promote a film."
Then Tyler Perry called her into his room. He and Oprah were producers on the film. She says Perry told her a nomination would make her next movie worth $3 to $5 million. A win, $6 to $8 million.
"You can pay me to promote it," she told him.
"I'm not in the habit of giving out money for free," he said.
"Then I'm not in the habit of working for free."
She says Oprah's longtime makeup artist, Reggie Wells, asked Oprah why she didn't just pay her. Mo'Nique says the answer was: "I won't be paying her nothing."
She won the Oscar anyway. She says the big offers never came.
The case for the studio: every actor promotes their film. That campaign helped win her the Oscar. And $50,000 was the deal she signed.
So should Mo'Nique have promoted it for free?
This explains why negros don't understand capitalism and nepotism, and their positions in it.
Billionaire Tyler Perry gave his own family 60 days to find jobs or lose his financial support. Despite being worth an estimated $1.4 billion, he refused to keep supporting relatives who weren't working.
In the video below, Perry explains why he fired his own aunt and later gave other family members an ultimatum after his mother's death.
He wanted them to become financially independent instead of relying on his fortune.
One aunt regularly called asking for money, and Perry kept sending it until he offered her a job. But she repeatedly called in and failed to show up for work, so he eventually fired her.
His mother had also asked him to support other relatives, and he continued helping them while she was alive. After she died in 2009, Perry sent them letters giving them 60 days to find employment or lose his financial support.
According to Perry, every relative eventually found a job. He didn't care whether the jobs paid well because he wanted them to earn their own money and have something to feel proud of.
Perry also recalled a relative getting angry when he refused to hand over $1 million. He believed that continually giving money to people who refused to work was making their dependence worse.
A billionaire who could afford to support his entire family chose to make them earn their own living.
If you had $1.4 billion, would you keep supporting unemployed relatives or give them the same 60-day ultimatum?
