Crying tears of joy here. An absolute hero, finally out of prison. We’ve campaigned for years for his freedom. We got there.
BREAKING: We are utterly delighted by the news that finally, after over 2,073 days of unjust imprisonment, our brave friend and former colleague Andrei Aliaksandrau has been released from jail in Belarus.

I’m an encryption evangelist and believe everyone would be if they knew just how central private, secure communications are to freedom of expression. A source of huge frustration to all of us working in this space that we must continue to make the case to the U.K. government.
The UK is now classed as a country where encryption is under severe threat, alongside China & Russia, as this map shows. Encryption keeps our communications secure. It’s staggering that the UK government isn’t doing everything in its power to defend it. gp-digital.org/world-map-of-…

Five people “planned to stage a car accident with the intention of breaking his arms and legs so he would be hospitalised and unable to go on stage, the prosecutors said.” Sinister plot to silence a comedian taking on Xi in Taiwan foiled, thankfully. hongkongfp.com/2026/10/22/ta…

One issue with having gotten arrested in late March 2023 was that I was unable to keep writing about the tens of thousands of innocent Russian and Ukrainian political prisoners held in Russian jails. I’ve included some of their stories in This Cursed Beautiful Land, out now

Brilliant column here from the great Fintan O’Toole, who nails the argument that many things can be true at once & teases out the difference between virtue signalling versus actual stands on moral principle

The journalists were carrying out work firmly in the public interest (investigating Ukraine’s former Prosecutor General who’s embroiled in a money laundering scandal). Coincidence? Even if unrelated their treatment is still disturbing.
Two journalists from @pravda_eng were violently arrested in Vienna this month. The Vienna prosecutor’s office has yet to provide a convincing explanation. The circumstances demand a full and transparent investigation. More on the case: indexoncensorship.org/2026/1…

Wowza. I’m all for people studying Chinese history, culture, politics and languages but the jump from impartial learning to let’s get cosy with Beijing is huge and needs to be avoided at all costs.
Students are being taught that Britain must forge closer links with China in a textbook accused of peddling “propaganda”, The Telegraph can reveal. The A-level book, widely used in schools by British teenagers studying Mandarin, says the UK should “deepen cooperation” with Beijing in the wake of Brexit ⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

Not everything done in the name of a cause is legitimate protest. If the intention is to shut down someone else then the free speech defence becomes thin. Yesterday the remarkable Adam Wagner KC had his talk on Israeli hostages momentarily derailed. More👇 robertsharp.co.uk/2026/10/15…

Went to report on how repressive the publishing industry is in Hong Kong today (and it really is). What I didn’t expect to discover was a handful of dissenting bookstores that had opened in recent years. In awe of the brave booksellers. thebookseller.com/news/a-las…

I have no doubt people will disagree with some (or even all) of what a write here. And praise be! That’ll at least show one aspect of free speech working in the U.K.

Anne Frank died of typhus in a concentration camp and Hind Rajab died terrified in a car and neither of them should have died and both of their deaths are awful and I don't think we need to make a competition out of dead children.
Anne Frank died of typhus. Hind Rajab died being directly shot by Jewish terrorists. Could these ghouls be any clearer that only Jewish lives matter to them?
