FROM COACHING HIGH SCHOOL TO THE CFP?
Lots of #Wolfpack chatter about Philip Rivers and the now-vacant head coaching job at NC State.
Since 1974, only five coaches have gone straight from a high school sideline to an FBS head coaching job.
1974: Bob Commings, Iowa
From Washington High (Massillon, Ohio). Lasted five seasons; fired after 1978.
1981: Gerry Faust, Notre Dame
From Moeller High (Cincinnati) with no college coaching experience. Went 30-26-1 with a Liberty Bowl win and resigned after 1985.
2007: Todd Dodge, North Texas
From Southlake Carroll High (Texas), where he went 79-1 over his last five seasons. Went 6-37 at North Texas and never won more than two games in a year.
2015: Tony Sanchez, UNLV
From Bishop Gorman High (Las Vegas) after six straight state titles. Went 20-40, had no postseason, and was fired after five seasons.
2022: Trent Dilfer, UAB
From Lipscomb Academy (Nashville). Went 9-21 and was fired in October 2025.
Five hires in 48 years. Only Faust finished above .500.
All of these hires predated the NIL era.

Every USC fan told me I didn’t know what I was talking about. USC should’ve stayed in the Pac-12. They weren’t built for the Big Ten, and they helped blow up a conference chasing a payday instead of on the field results. You did this to yourselves, Trojans.
USC made about $212M in athletics revenue in its final Pac-12 season. Last year, that climbed by roughly $20M after joining the Big Ten.
But here’s the tradeoff: if USC had stayed in the Pac-12, its path to the College Football Playoff likely would’ve been much easier and would of made more than that… Instead, if this season goes sideways, the same fans cheering the move will be calling for a $90M Lincoln Riley buyout.
So did USC really come out ahead? More revenue is great, but if it leads to missing the Playoff and writing a nine-figure coaching check, the Pac-12 years may have been the better financial deal after all.

Take away Pat Narduzzi’s wins against non P4 teams and he’s 61-64.
That stinks. Sorry.

“Rivers hasn’t returned text or phone messages since the N.C. State coaching change was made Saturday morning.”
“Rivers has decided not to coach in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic in December. He was slated to be the offensive coordinator for the Alabama team.”
Will Philip Rivers leave St. Michael to become the next coach at N.C. State? Here's my take from covering him for the past 6 seasons. #alpreps

Sunday Thoughts: New Mexico is a beautiful state. You should visit.
And that Lobo defense is ferocious. They lead the nation in scoring and takeaways, and it won them the game last night.

The attendance narrative is really dumb. UCLA is rebuilding season ticket holders who've been beaten down for two decades. You won't see the rewards of a season with this success until next year.
They also don't count students with attendance numbers since they get in for free.

7 games too late.
A ridiculous hire and one we first guessed hard all offseason on the show. Wasted season.
