We don't carve pumpkins in Scotland, we carve neeps (turnips)!* I think they look far scarier and that's what they're for, to ward off bad spirits, keeping us safe with their light. *of course people do carve pumpkins too, but this is the real tradition.

It is now 37 years ago that the last episode of #Blackadder Goes Forth was screened. This TV gold concluded 3 hrs of unmatched of comedy to many of us. But there was a deeper message throughout encapsulated in this moving final scene. Vid: BlackadderQtes

Well after today’s announcement from the Bank of England, there is something very, very, very wrong in the system. So … let me get this straight: * British Gas made a profit of £1.3bn between January & June * BP announced profits of £6.95 billion between April and June alone * Shell has profited by £9.4bn in a year The MEN at the top: * John Pettigrew, boss of National Grid received £6.5m bonus on top of his salary * Chris O’Shea, chief executive of British Gas owner Centrica was paid almost £2m last year in salary and benefits * Centrica's non-executive directors were paid almost £1m * Scottish Power's CEO Keith Anderson is on £1.15m. * E.On boss Michael Lewis is on £1m * EDF's Simone Rossi is also on £1m * And their top execs enjoyed a share of £4.65m * Peter Simpson of Anglian Water earned a £1.3m pay package * Welsh Water bosses awarded themselves bonuses of over £930,000 * Severn Trent bosses awarded themselves bonuses of £5.56m * Thames Water's Sarah Bentley, received a £727,000 bonus on top of her £2m annual salary Meanwhile there are... * People who haven't had breakfast and/or lunch TODAY, because they can't afford it. * People using FoodBanks because food is becoming more of a luxury than a necessity. * Children celebrating a birthday without presents. * Parents worrying about new school uniforms - and some schools enforcing rules which are not cost-effective. * People who can't get to work because they can't afford to put petrol in their cars/pay for public transport anymore. * People who are working so much they're making themselves ill, and they STILL CAN'T AFFORD to pay their bills. * People who have been given fines by these same energy/water companies because they couldn't afford to pay their bills in the first place - increasing their debt. * Customers being told to do STAR JUMPS TO KEEP WARM for crying out loud! * Hose pipe bans when gallons of water leak away everyday. * Elderly people NOT DRINKING because they're worried about running out of water!!! All this and energy prices are set to rise up to 75% in October... THIS IS MADNESS!.. I'm all for supporting profits … I'm not for supporting greed at the cost of lives of others. Something needs to change. Why is customers' money being used to make life more comfortable for those who are making life more intolerable for the rest of us? I actually don't understand how the energy companies are allowed to get away with this and why the government aren't stopping them instead of handing out money.....

The residents of Auchtertool in Fife are taking a stand against a monster AI data centre that is being proposed to be situated right next to their scenic village and beautiful countryside. Please watch this video by the schoolchildren of Auchtertool. The proposed data centre is one of the biggest in the world - bigger than their village. And it’s estimated that the 600MW energy consumption with be 20% of Scotland entire energy consumption. It’s also being situated on beautiful countryside. Fife Council haven’t published an environmental impact report. This campaign to stop this AI data centre monstrosity in Fife is now receiving huge amounts of media and social media coverage. For once, people power can defeat tech corporations power if this campaign continues to be amplified.

I’ve been waiting two years to share this post. My new book, The Wonder Years: How the First 45 Months Shape Your Baby’s Brain… and Who They’ll Become, will be published on July 13, 2027 by Ballantine Books (Penguin Random House). Not only that, but it’s available for pre-order now. Seems only fitting that a baby book should take nine months to arrive, right? (Ordering info below.) The Wonder Years is an origin story. Yours. It traces the wonders of early development from conception to age three - exploring gestation and prenatal learning, the importance of secure attachment, and the development of language, motor skills and more. It’s for new parents and grandparents… but it’s not just for them. As I say in the introduction, if you’ve ever wondered about the forgotten years that shaped you into who you’ve become, The Wonder Years is not only a book FOR you… it’s a book ABOUT you. No baby required! I think you’re going to like it a lot. How can you help? Right now the answer is to PRE-ORDER. This helps retailers know what to promote and how many they need to stock. If you’re an Amazon user you can check it out at the link in the first comment below, but you can also find it now at Barnes and Noble, Hudson, and all your favorite indies. (I’ll also share a link to bookshop dot org, which allows you to order from any of hundreds of independent bookstores.) And if you pre-order I have a few special surprises coming your way. Documented pre-orders will receive: A hand signed bookplate. Access to an exclusive Zoom Q&A open only to advance purchasers. And if you preorder before Dec 1 you’ll be entered in a drawing to win one of 10 signed copies of my book The Daycare Myth. To claim your bookplate and get added to the pre-order list, send a screenshot confirming your order to dwuori at gmail dot com. Be sure to include your mailing address, so I can send your bookplate - which will be mailed in July so you can stick it directly in your book. I’d be so grateful! BTW if you’re a friend outside the US, know that the book will also have a dedicated UK release from Quercus Books, which you can now preorder via Waterstones and Amazon UK. It will also have a German translation which is available for preorder now and a Spanish language version soon to post. Can’t wait to get it into your hands!

To my horror, I am reading that the US plan to live stream an execution. Surely this is the point at which humanity loses its soul and moral compass. Dreadful. Utterly barbaric. This is the rhetoric of savages. Where is the outrage from world leaders?

Everyone keeps calling it a cost of living crisis. But when companies keep raising prices while reporting record profits, maybe we should start calling it what it really feels like: a cost of greed crisis.

Given what is happening in the world right now, it is right that genocide is never celebrated or forgotten. Young people are our hope.
Our National Education Competition is open for entries! This year's theme is Identity. We're asking young people in Scotland S1-S6 to explore what identity means to them, and how we remember and respond to the Srebrenica genocide today. (1/2)

There is something happing in the U.K. Immigrants are actually leaving because of what they are witnessing in the U.K. We’ve successfully bullied thousands of international doctors and nurses into packing their bags and moving to Australia. Finally, our hospital waiting rooms

So true!
They took memory cards from us and made us pay for storage. They took CDs and DVDs and made us pay for streaming. They took software you could buy once and turned it into a monthly subscription. They took ownership, convenience, and basically everything that used to be a one-time purchase… then somehow made us pay for it every month.
