With a contemporary smartphone, capturing, transmitting, and replicating sounds and visuals is a breeze, yet replicating scents remains elusive. If you want to change this, consider joining the 2025 @DR_E_A_M Olfaction Challenge at synapse.org/Synapse:syn64743….

Can we predict what a molecule smells like from its structure? A new exchange in @ChemSenses debates this question. @KingFunk5000 @emilyjmayhew
Doty replied, pushing back on several points. We see modern models predicting perception as half full and he sees them as half empty. buff.ly/0soT0wW
Scientists at Firmenich buff.ly/jq1TyYa and now Givaudan buff.ly/u2gP5Ow report several olfactory receptors that appear to map cleanly onto specific odor notes (earthy, grapefruit, woody, etc.).
Building on last year's Mixture Discriminability Challenge, we're offering a dataset of 650+ blends, each assessed by trained panelists using a 51-word scent lexicon.
My favorite part of these challenges is after the competition closes. All participants get together and work collaboratively on a manuscript summarizing key insights and where the field stands. Join us! synapse.org/Synapse:syn64743…

Drugs like Ozempic are great for weight loss, but they make some people feel sick. We discovered that the brain circuits mediating the appetite suppression are distinct from those that mediate nausea – a finding that may be leveraged to develop more selective GLP1-based drugs.

Today in @Nature--
@MonellSc researchers, led by @AmberAlhadeff, share new findings that point towards a possible way to reduce adverse side effects of popular next-generation obesity medications like GLP1-based drugs, known as semaglutide and marketed as Ozempic® and Wegovy®
