Jacksonville recorded ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐๐๐, the fewest since at least 1995. This figure is less than half the number of murders reported in 2023.
Sheriff Waters attributes this historic drop to the hard work of the men and women of your #JSO and the collaboration with the community and a close partnership with the State Attorneyโs Office. JSOโs Group Violence Intervention strategy, which combines detectives, advanced technology, and community resources, has proven to be highly effective.
Let us be clear: ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐๐ซ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐จ๐จ ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ฒ. People are always more valuable than statistics. However, this monumental decrease is a promising step as we continue striving to make Jacksonville a safer place to live, work, and visit ๐ก๐ผ๐ด.

Nearly two years. 12 arrests. Millions of dollarsโ worth of seized propertyโone of the largest seizures in our agencyโs history. A crackdown on illegal gaming.
Your #JSO Vice Unit spearheaded this multi-agency operation to shut down illegal gaming locations in Jacksonville. From March 2023 to December of this year, detectives worked tirelessly to identify these illegal operations and arrest those who were profiting off them. On December 11th, we served seven search warrants simultaneously, capturing those responsible for these illegal gaming rooms.
ITEMS SEIZED
๐ฐ 263 illegal gambling devices, including slot machines, fish tables, and desktop computers
๐ฐ $2.5M in illegally sourced cash
๐ $1.2M in jewelry, watches, and purses (paid for with illegally obtained money)
๐๏ธ 15 vehicles and a trailer (valued at almost $1.7M, paid for with illegally obtained money)
๐ซ 52 firearms
๐๏ธ 2 houses
๐ข 1 commercial building
This operation is about much more than shutting down illegal businesses; itโs about keeping your neighborhood safe. Where there is illegal business, there is violence. During the timeframe of Operation Fish & Chips, two people were killed at illegal gaming locations across Duval County. There were also 8 robberies and 26 aggravated assaults at these sites. Shutting these locations down removes one accelerant that fuels violence in our community.
We want to thank our state and federal partners for their role in Operation Fish & Chips: Floridaโs Attorney Generalโs Office statewide prosecution, the Florida Gaming Control Commission, the United States Secret Service, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"@JSOPIO has made Jacksonville a safer place. The Commission commends JSO for its determined pursuit and willingness to tackle illegal gaming throughout Duval County.ย While the Defendants face serious RICO charges and other financial crimes in these cases, the underlying criminal gaming activity is classified at the lowest misdemeanor level. Without changes to the law and higher penalties, criminals may continue to be emboldened to operate illegal slot machine businesses and cheat Floridians out of their hard-earned money." โ Ross Marshman, Acting Executive Director

We are devastated by the brutal and senseless murder of one of our brave officers, who was taken from us while selflessly serving and protecting our community. This is an attack not only on our agency but on the very fabric of law and order.
We will stop at nothing to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure they face the full weight of the law. Our fallen officerโs sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we stand united in our commitment to honor his memory by relentlessly pursuing justice.
On October 12, 2024, Sheriff T.K. Waters, alongside Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey, joined Chief of Investigation Alan Parker to provide details leading up to the murder of one of our Corrections Officers.
At approximately 1:20 a.m., in the 12900 block of Duval Road, a black Mustang occupied by a black male (suspect) and a female, were involved in a violent dispute. During the argument, the suspect was observed exiting the vehicle from the passenger seat and walking around to the driverโs side. The suspect then placed a black handgun on the hood of the vehicle and removed the female from the driverโs seat. The male proceeded to batter the female, violently throwing her against the vehicle and the ground.
During the commotion, off-duty Corrections Officer Bradley McNew #7697, who just finished his shift, heard the disturbance and went to check on the female victim. The suspect approached Officer McNew, stating it was a family matter, then re-engaged with the female before pointing the gun in Officer McNewโs direction. The suspect and female eventually returned to the vehicle. As they left the scene, the suspect was observed hanging out of the window, firing the firearm, and ultimately striking Officer McNew. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
This is an ongoing investigation, and we ask the public to remain vigilant and consider the suspect armed and dangerous. The vehicle was reported heading northbound on Main Street towards Nassau County. It is a 2000 black Mustang with North Carolina license plate RHL-4285. Please do not approach the suspect or vehicle; call 911 immediately if observed.
