About 5 billion cubic feet of gas entered New York on Monday, enough to run every gas-using home in New York for about four and a half days. Two-thirds of it came across the Pennsylvania line: on Millennium near Binghamton, on Tennessee at the far western corner of the state, and on National Fuel, Eastern Gas and Empire across the Southern Tier. Most of the rest came from New Jersey, on Transco into the city and on Algonquin and Tennessee into Rockland County. Canada sent a trickle through Waddington. More than half of it didn’t stay. About 0.8 Bcf left for Ontario across the Niagara River, 0.8 went to Massachusetts on Tennessee, and about 1.0 went to Connecticut on Algonquin and Iroquois. That’s normal. In 2024, 55% of the gas that entered New York left again, according to EIA. Much of New England’s and Ontario’s gas reaches them through our state. What stayed was split almost evenly. Power plants burned about 1.1 Bcf, and utility customers (homes, businesses and factories) used about 1.1. Monday was mild: Central Park reached 69 degrees, eight above normal, and heating demand was about half the usual for the date. In winter the split changes. In January 2025, homes, businesses and industry used more than three times as much gas as the power plants. The plants made 36% of the electricity New York used on Monday. Their output bottomed out at 4.9 gigawatts overnight and peaked at 7.2 gigawatts in the 7 PM hour, after sunset. Many of those plants don’t appear in the pipeline postings at all. The biggest plants in the city, including Ravenswood, Astoria, Arthur Kill and the Brooklyn Navy Yard, buy their gas through Con Ed and National Grid, so the pipelines record it as deliveries to utilities. City plants that buy from a utility burned about a quarter of New York’s power-plant gas in October 2025. How we count: these numbers come from the daily postings of the eight interstate pipelines, which show scheduled flows, not metered ones. Electricity comes from NYISO’s fuel mix, and the yearly comparisons come from EIA. Tennessee doesn’t post where it crosses from Pennsylvania, so we work that flow out from what it delivers in New York and New England.

At CERA Week earlier this year - this is exactly what companies said was needed to make Venezuela investable
Mike Wirth, Chevron CEO on their $7 billion investment into Venezuela: "There have been significant changes in dispute resolution provisions and assurance of terms and economics in the contracts. They’ve got enforceable mechanisms that give us a different degree of confidence today to make these investments than there would have been a year ago." CNBC's @SullyCNBC: "So things, fair to say, the operating environment here has evolved enough where you’re willing to commit the seven billion like that? If it wasn’t for that change, that seven billion of additional capital may not have occurred." Wirth: "I think that’s fair to say. The Venezuelan government and the US government both see the opportunity to improve regional energy security, US energy security, improve reliable supply to US refineries, and bring investment and development to the Venezuelan economy. So both governments have been very supportive of this evolution of terms to encourage investment from companies like ours, and I expect there will be others."

Sounds like a pretty good deal
Frederick County, Maryland, just announced a $110 MILLION community benefits agreement tied to a data center development. $30M for a local school. $40M for a community center. $14.5M for workforce training. $5M to help lower residents’ energy bills.

SpaceX and Tesla are each building 100GW/year of solar production capacity as fast as possible, but natural gas will still be needed to supplement and bootstrap solar for several years. The limiting factor for nat gas turbine production is casting the blades & vanes. By doing in-house casting at SpaceX, we can accelerate nat gas turbines coming online by up to 18 months, which is a profound game-changer.

The collective market activity of aggressive energy power development supporting data centers at a rapid scale is unprecedented.
At the moment: 472 gas-fired power plants are under development in the US, with 270 gigawatts of combined generation capacity.

The political environment around data centers significantly deteriorated this week.

In Loudoun Virginia home to more than 200 data centers, tax revenue from data centers has exploded. As a result, over the past 10years, they lowered the real property tax rate every year from $1.145 in tax year 2016 to $0.805 cents per $100 in assessed value for 2026.

A Data Center Came to A Small Town. You’ll Never Guess What Happened Next* *unless you guessed lots of jobs, lots of tax revenue, spillover benefits to local business like hotels and restaurants, discounts on electric bills, and grants for teachers.
My latest column: On a recent family trip to Aberdeen, SD, it was nearly impossible to book hotel rooms. Why? A 400MW data center in Ellendale, ND, pop 1100. Overnight, rents have doubled & the town’s pop has tripled. Welcome to the new American frontier: sfchronicle.com/opinion/arti…

Great job New Jersey
Electricity prices have risen dramatically in states with few data centers, while states with lots of data centers have not seen dramatic price increases. Maybe it's not the data centers.

America’s energy problem isn’t a lack of resources – it’s a failure of political will to build the infrastructure to move them. Permitting reform costs taxpayers zero dollars but will unlock massive economic growth & lower utility bills. It’s time to get America building again! Watch my inaugural speech on the Senate floor ⤵️

The crypto market structure bill has PASSED the Senate Banking Committee with a bi-partisan vote! Historic day for crypto and for the future of digital assets in America. Grateful for the countless hours from lawmakers and staff to strengthen this legislation. Big improvement from where we were in January on rewards, tokenization, DeFi, and CFTC authority. I'm proud we stood up for our customers in that moment, and the bill is better because of it. Looking forward to a bipartisan law that cements the US as the world's crypto capital. Let's get CLARITY done.
