Glanced over at the clock, saw it was 8:04 a.m., and felt a jolt of panic because school is starting in 6 minutes!
It's Saturday. I need to go back to bed.
I stole this station activity from someone on twitter last year and it's going so well! I've been overhearing great conversations as students have been moving around solving the isotope problems. #iteachchem
Here's the original post I got it from: xitter.cf/HamikChem/status/15730β¦
And here's the slides I made: docs.google.com/presentationβ¦
Hope this helps!!!
Today #BurkeChem students practiced recognizing isotopes and writing atomic/isotope notation by interpreting and making models(some stations pictured here). βοΈ Retro-active props to whoever suggested at @ChemEd2019 to use tinier beads for electrons! #iteachchem @OPS_Burke
I wanted to go outside today and had the bright idea to take organic out to draw branched alkanes with chalk on the sidewalk. Twenty-one students running amok with chalk was, umm, not the best. Oops.
Just got home to a pile of amazon boxes on the porch and found out that @Clorox cleared out my classroom wishlist!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

Higher education should be a ticket to the middle-class, not a burden weighing down folks that've been trying to pay their debt for decades.
On Day One, I promised to fix problems in our student loan program that've hurt borrowers.
Weβre keeping that promise. Here's the latest:

I would propose:
A chloride: a salty or aggressive remark
An iodide: a colorful or interesting remark
A fluoride: a remark used to prevent tooth decay that is widely debated
I'm having way more dread about the upcoming school year than usual. I weirdly feel like it might be because I was actually productive this summer and got my book written? Normally I'm bored by this point and excited to get back.
I'm enjoying my summer, I don't want it to end!
Got my google classrooms set up today! Sent all the invites to the students while not expecting them to join for a week or two, but a lot of them joined immediately and some of them started introducing themselves on the welcome post. These kids are on it!
Also made my animated banners for organic chem. Last year I just left that class on default all year, LOL. No idea if the kids care about animated banners, but I enjoy making them and think they look fun.
2016-present: Chemistry teacher
I started teaching chemistry and I am still teaching chemistry. I haven't taught any other subjects or grades. My qualification is in chemistry. My job is just chemistry. Chemistry is me. And I am Kenough.
Next year I'm teaching two sections of organic chemistry, three sections of chemistry, and one section of honors chem.
I haven't decided what to do for a first day demo or lab for organic chem yet. Didn't like what I used this past year. If anyone has a suggestion, let me know!

I'd love to take a #foodchem professional development/workshop/course this summer. Does anyone know of anything? #iteachchem
Me, reading this on my lunch break: Is this a call out? Am I being called out?
The real reason: Because my one organic class is right before lunch and I need to reset for my chem classes.
I always make sure to take a few minutes to relax, too!
I've been playing around with using ChatGPT to help me brainstorm lessons, and honestly? It's very fun. There are things it's bad at (it doesn't get jokes and it's hands-on activities are frequently nonsense) but it's given me case studies I wouldn't have though of on my own.
It's also helped me quickly organize ideas and generated little mini assessments and project outlines.
I even used it to come up with an idea where the students brainstorm using ChatGPT for a project. Going to need to check with IT to make sure it isn't blocked before I try it.
My favorite example of ChatGPT missing the joke. (What does "you've been electron-ized" even mean???) (The answer is supposed to be "Bro-mine!")

ALT One element might say to another "You've been electron-ized" when he takes his stuff. This is a play on words, as in chemistry electrons are negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus of an atom. Taking someone's stuff can be referred to as "getting robbed" or "getting taken" and in this case the play on words is "electron-ized" , as if the element has lost electrons, and hence its properties have changed. This is a light-hearted and playful way to use chemistry terms and concepts to make a joke. It is important to note that elements don't have the ability to own or take something, as they are not living organisms, but again this is a joke that uses elements to play with words.
