Man I always knew there was something incredibly spiritually misaligned about decaf coffee
Most decaf coffee is made with methylene chloride. It's the solvent that used to be in paint stripper.
The green beans are steamed, then washed in methylene chloride, which pulls out the caffeine and not much else. The beans are steamed again to drive off the solvent and then roasted at over 400F. FDA allows up to 10 parts per million. When a lab tested 24 decaf brands in 2020 it found the solvent in 10 of them at about 0.05 to 0.1 ppm, around 100 times below the limit. The industry calls this the European method.
There are 3 other ways to do it. Ethyl acetate, a solvent that can be made from sugarcane, which the trade calls the natural method. Carbon dioxide under pressure. And the Swiss Water process, which uses hot water and carbon filters and no solvent at all. Peet's says all of its decaf is water process. Starbucks has told reporters most of its decaf is the direct contact method, meaning solvent.
EPA banned most uses of methylene chloride in 2024, but food is FDA's job, so decaf wasn't part of it. A petition to pull it from food has sat at FDA since December 2023. FDA reopened comments on it in May and hasn't decided. If the bag says Swiss Water or water process, no solvent touched it. If the bag says nothing, you don't know.

Never doom, theres money to be made all around you
This is awesome 😂
This sounds insane until you’ve been on enough date nights where you spend $250 to discuss the kids’ schedules in a different building.
The backstory is pretty great!
A married couple in San Diego wanted to get dressed up and go to a wedding. Problem was, they’d reached the age where nobody they knew was getting married anymore.
So they built a website where you can buy tickets to strangers’ weddings.
And the economics actually make sense.
The couple getting married has already committed to a venue minimum. Someone cancels. Now there’s an empty chair and a dinner they’re paying for either way.
Meanwhile, another couple would happily pay to eat, dance, have some cake and watch a best man make a series of increasingly questionable decisions with a microphone.
The hosts approve the guests. Guests verify their IDs. Everybody agrees to the arrangement.
Which is arguably more vetting than your cousin’s new boyfriend received.
Apparently one bride said the paying strangers brought so much energy to the dance floor that she wished she’d invited more.
Of course they did. Those people specifically bought tickets to be there. Half your actual guests are attending under a treaty negotiated between their mothers.
I love businesses like this. Find something people already paid for but can’t fully use. Find someone else who wants it. Make the introduction.
This guy just wanted to take his wife dancing and accidentally identified a liquidity problem in the wedding market.
Cue Vince Vaughn!
Whats missing from this list?
German guy and his wife at the empty beachside campsite in Norway invited me into their RV for an evening tea…
Didn’t know what to expect but the hospitality was 10/10…
Guy whips out pen/paper and starts whittling out spots I need to see near the Alps.
A dying art, preserve the Ferdinands of the world at all costs

The way to do this is to figure out how with your one singular tiny insignificant life you can absolutely maximally serve the greater good that is your fellow human beings now and for generations to come
Normie brains are getting cooked w/ content like this daily
why does it feel like the AI pullback has begun
