Absolutely correct - glad the pretence that these decisions have nothing to do with politics is finally being dropped.
With Andy Burnham referring to ‘quasi-judicial’ processes to grant new oil and gas licences, Hugo Rifkind (unsuccessfully) attempts to discover the meaning behind Westminster’s latest word salad. “Explain it to me!” “I can’t” @hugorifkind

Seismic news coming out of Flutter this morning. Fundamentals of that business are exceptionally sound and it’s being taxed out of the market. A genuine disgrace and thoughts with a lot of good people who will be affected.

The document claimed a Leave vote would plunge the UK into immediate recession and cause 500,000 job losses. Which didn't happen?

Fair few ex-MP passholders in Parliament today. Funny old place where former employees can breeze back into their old place of work no questions asked. Why do they genuinely need them?

Andy Burnham is casting around for quick - and free - ways to bring down prices. Many think this would be a tap-in: Plans to ban supermarkets offering multi-buy deals on staple foods like bran flakes and yoghurts have sparked fresh fury as the cost of living crisis bites.

⛽️Fuel duty set to be frozen for a 16th consecutive year but talks on the 5p cut going down to the wire. Insiders admit it would be “political suicide” to hike pump costs in the current climate. ✂️John Healey wants to shift Budget focus from tax and spend and instead undertake a big deregulation drive to give businesses some relief. 🐎Chancellor is being pressed by Labour MPs/Whitehall to hike betting taxes but is increasingly sympathetic to industry arguments over the impact on jobs. Go and have a lie down Ryan. You’re a nice chap with some good ideas but you’re making a tit of yourself with this. What you want is a recipe for no meaningful scrutiny. All specialists are to some degree captives of the contacts on their patch - see business, sports and fashion journalists too. Having jack of All Trades pol eds are a protection against that and the collective force of the lobby - flawed and too beloved of personality as it undoubtedly is sometimes - is the best defence for the public. Individual journalists can be bullied and pushed off scandal (see Arday) but as a pack there is strength in numbers. And news organisations are not just there for the public service. They are commercial organisations and if you want the (vast) policy coverage that appears you also need it to be worth reading. Most people outside of specialist journals don’t debate policy. By pinning different solutions to their political supporters much nuance can be smuggled in by showing who is advancing what and why. And we write about internal rows and debates and careers and ambition precisely because you cannot understand the acquisition, use and abuse of power without doing so - and because frankly that’s what politicians and their aides spend a huge amount of time thinking about. Policy doesn’t exist in a vacuum and “what works” is often less important than who is pushing an idea and why. Power struggles, union backing, business group advocacy and ministerial oneupmanship are all part of determining which policy gets adopted
Struck by the criticism on this by *some* journalists. They rightly think they should criticise powerful people, and indeed do, suggesting changes to the way they do things. But when it comes to me suggesting changes to the way they operate, some of them have been defensive and dismissive. I’ve been scoffed at several times by some of them that I don’t know what I’m talking about.

And should remember: Jonathan Reynolds and the government are still refusing to disclose who else attended the Sept. 14 meeting in No10 with Man City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, and what was discussed. Which is the opposite of transparent and comprehensive!
Man City latest: Andy Burnham's spox says that Monday's statement provided a "comprehensive" account of his dealings with Man City, but that he has ordered a "manual trawl" to find what other meetings he might have had with the club. Try to square that circle... No10 also not retracting his previous claim to have had just "one significant meeting", despite other meetings have since come to light.
