This is sad to say but true: the comments of the President of the US on Ireland are irrelevant. 1. He has lost the capacity to shock. We are all worn down. What used to shock now bores. 2. He is inconsistent. What he says one day is contradicted the next. 3. The post-Trump era has already begun. With the mid terms in November and the inevitable drain on authority on a term expired President in the last 2 years the US and the world will look to what comes next. For all those with responsibility for politics in Northern Ireland the sensible thing to do is treat these flippant and ill informed comments with the total lack of seriousness they merit. Nonetheless it is a sad situation we are in.
