Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya and her senior officials had received at least three reports on water quality in the months leading up to the crisis, which left hundreds of residents ill after drinking water contaminated with E. coli tinyurl.com/2k53mdxb

Who is really sabotaging Tshwane? Accountability starts at the top, not with a plant manager.
The rushed suspension of the Bronkhorstspruit plant manager just before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee briefing was not accountability. It was stage management. It let the City walk into Parliament looking like a victim of rogue officials, instead of answering for its own political failures.
The facts are in the government's own briefing to Parliament. Slide 26 records that in February 2026, the Department of Water and Sanitation issued a non-compliance letter on the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works. In March 2026, the City submitted an action plan with clear commitments: secure treatment chemicals, refurbish filters, install pumps, and recruit for critical posts. The department's finding is blunt: none of these commitments were implemented in the timeframes provided.
So we ask, who is responsible for filling those posts? Recruitment sits with Corporate and Shared Services and the MMC responsible is from ActionSA. In March 2026, that portfolio was led by ActionSA's Kholofelo Morodi, who was then fired over corruption allegations raised at the Madlanga Commission. Since April it has been led by another ActionSA MMC, Flora Monama.
For seven months, the portfolio responsible for staffing the City has been in ActionSA's hands. The posts were not filled, and the plant was left without the qualified process controllers that DWS says it needs.

The breakdown in @CityTshwane is systemic. Executive Mayor @NasiphiMoya handles overall governance, MMC Mashola is over water procurement, and MMC Hannes Coetzee is mandated to protect municipal assets. All three have dropped the ball collectively. No more excuses.

This is a terrible reflection of the people you have surrounded yourself with, and encountered in your whole life in the political space Krila.
It is also a very unfortunate thing to use as a defence, presumably for your party not having a manifesto. It must trouble us all that voting can happen without any interaction with a plan to govern.
May this change and improve.

The capital city’s CBD and surrounding areas water supply is contaminated. Residents are advised to boil it before consumption. This follows the collapse of the Bronkhorstspruit water treatment facility and a health crisis.
There must be solutions at suburb-level scale for closed system water purification and reticulation, independent of municipal supply. Like solar, communities pool resources to setup their own water purification and treatment systems. Like everything else, private solutions are the future.
Is it affordable? Can it be done? Is there something to learn from Israel?

The City of Tshwane Department of Health hereby informs residents of microbiological failures detected during water quality monitoring in the Findlay Reservoir water supply, which supplies the Pretoria CBD and other affected areas.
As a precautionary measure, residents in the affected areas are advised to boil all water intended for drinking, cooking, food preparation, brushing teeth and other household uses until further notice. @CityTshwane

@henriettefroh Let’s turn our attention to the Department of Water and Sanitation and remind everyone of the role of the Section 79 Oversight Chairperson for Utilities.
The chairperson’s responsibility is to lead the committee’s oversight of the relevant municipal utility services, scrutinise the performance of the responsible departments, examine reports, identify service-delivery failures and ensure that concerns are raised and addressed through the appropriate council processes.
So, where is the Oversight Chairperson when questions are being raised about water and sanitation? Why is ActionSA not demanding accountability from their deployees?
🚨EFF MMC Mashabela fails in her understanding of leadership during the Bronkhorstspruit water crisis. #LetActionLead
EFF MMC Tshegofatso Mashabela diligently flagged the rise in stomach illness in Bronkhorstspruit and is now calling for accountability over what has been described as the ActionSA chlorine cover-up."

That’s the problem with ActionSA supporters. You disrespect us, speak nonsense, and even your leaders join in. The moment we respond, suddenly you become victims.
I had allowed the Group Head to deal with the matter, but the moment you thought we wouldn’t respond, you resorted to calling us names.
We are responding on an official letterhead because we took an oath to be accountable, not to hide reports or shield anyone from scrutiny.
Must we clap hands while ActionSA disrespects us and expects us to remain silent? Not me.

@ME_Beaumont and @HermanMashaba, let me help you, since you clearly don't know how the City you govern works.
I am the MMC of Health. My job was to sound the alarm on what looked like a diarrhoea outbreak, and I did. It was OUR Health Department, with the Tshwane District, that picked up the high numbers. Not your Mayor. Not your City Manager. Us.
Now let's talk about who actually failed.
Your Mayor is responsible for ROC and the water business unit. Your MMC of Corporate and Shared Services is responsible for Bronkhorstspruit. Your City Manager, the man you defended with everything, heads the administration. Where is he? On vacation, while children are falling ill.
So answer this, what does Health have to do with your incompetent officials who could not procure chlorine for three weeks, and then kept quiet until we exposed the crisis?
Was Health supposed to guess that your administration was feeding the public contaminated water? Were we supposed to procure the chlorine too? Must Health now run your water unit because your people can't?
Health told residents not to drink the water. Your administration let them drink it. That is a violation of human rights, and you want to talk about hypocrisy?
Spare us the deflection.

As your friend and sister, I am deeply saddened by your comment below. It really pierced my heart that I can love and care for someone who can be this callous about a very painful chapter in our history.
Samora Machel’s contribution is a matter of historical record. Under his leadership, Mozambique sheltered South African exiles and supported the ANC’s liberation struggle, enduring apartheid military raids and destabilisation. Many died from the cross border incursions of the apartheid army into Mozambique. But many were saved by the protection Machel offered. Apartheid South Africa aligned with RENAMO, the armed militias fighting Machel's government.
Machel worked closely with Oliver Tambo and publicly defended the liberation movement. After South African forces attacked ANC safe houses in Matola in January 1981, he continued to affirm solidarity with the oppressed people of South Africa. 17 people were killed.
There is also a global, post and anti colonial element to Machel's place in history. Machel led FRELIMO’s struggle against Portuguese colonial rule and became Mozambique’s first president at independence in 1975. He regarded Mozambique’s freedom as inseparable from the liberation of its neighbours.
The Nkomati Accord was a tragic and painful moment that even Tambo understood. Machel was put in a corner by the well resourced apartheid regime- in exchange for ending support for RENAMO's military operations, apartheid SA demanded Machel restricts ANC presence in Mozambique. Basically, he had to choose between supporting the ANC or continuing the civil war in his country - which killed hundreds of thousands, caused hunger and disease. The Nkomati Accord was blackmail.
Machel and Mozambique paid a heavy price. We honour him. And your post, my friend and brother, is shameful and ignorant.

We are part of government in Mogale City and Rand West District - the most improved government structures in this term of office.
City of Tswhane has recovered from the years of maladministration by the DA, the city of Ekurhuleni won many awards under the EFF, you have seen the highest metro police visibility in this term and the clean up of Small street under the EFF government.
What are you talking about?

Disagree with her politics, but “straatmeit” is not political critique. It is a gendered insult used to reduce an outspoken woman to an unruly stereotype that must be put in her place. Address her argument. Her candidacy or being a doctor does not require her to be quiet, delicate or agreeable.
