๐Ÿคก Putin: โ€œIn Russia, we remember the lessons of the First and Second World Wars well, and we are doing everything to ensure that nothing like that happens on a global scaleโ€ Just think about that: a deranged old man whose brain has been irreversibly consumed by delusions of grandeur has unleashed the bloodiest war in Europe since World War II. Thousands of civilians have been killed, entire cities have been reduced to rubble, Russian losses have surpassed one million, and there is still no end in sight to this war. And he says Russia remembers the lessons! What lessons does it remember? This man is completely unhinged. His deranged theories, which drove him to invade Ukraine, defy all comment. But itโ€™s not just about his state of mind โ€” this creature rules Russia, and the majority of Russians donโ€™t see a problem with that.
โ€ผ๏ธPutin: โ€œWe are ready for war with Europe in 2030, but we donโ€™t want any warโ€ Is the dictator announcing his plans?

My wife's Aunt an Oleshky native, left it a bit more than a year ago. Even back then, it was extremely confusing, they were all forced to accept russian passports if they wanted financial or humanitarian aid assistance, without getting into the details of russian atrocities, her way to a Ukraine controlled portion of Ukraine was dangerous and she went through multiple filtration checkpoints where their phones were checked for suspicious communications. The road was very long and was via Crimea as well to one of the Baltic states and back to Ukraine. I can't imagine the state of the people who are left there right now and what will they have to go through to get back to normal lives.

While Kherson is experiencing a rare break from russian attacks, disturbing reports are emerging from the russian-occupied left bank of the Dnipro River. Local volunteers report that russian forces are using the temporary ceasefire to rotate troops, bring in heavy military equipment and ammunition, and reinforce their positions. Locals fear that russia is preparing for renewed attacks on Kherson. And with the ceasefire set to end on November 1, many residents are terrified of what might happen next.

Another large group of Russian troops has surrendered near Kupiansk. Ukrainian forces are clearing old Soviet gas-pipeline networks. Mud-covered men emerge from a concrete pipe. Then they kneel beside armed personnel. Forty-five days ago, Putin claimed Russia had โ€œliberatedโ€ Kupiansk. His soldiers are now surrendering near the town he declared taken. Moscow can announce a victory. It cannot make the troops sent through those pipelines hold it.

The ANC has governed South Africa since 1994. Shit now flows in our streets; we faced years of rolling blackouts, and taps now make children sick. In Bronkhorstspruit, east of Pretoria, more than 800 people have fallen ill since early October, most of them under four years old, from water sent out by the state's own treatment works, full of E. coli. Apparently, some official forgot to order chlorine. Somehow this party still expects to win the November 4 local elections, which tells you what state capture does to a voter base. Municipalities across Limpopo and the Eastern Cape now pipe sewage into the streets. ANC officials built the system this way, because a dependent electorate is a captive electorate. Central to this is cadre deployment, the practice of placing party loyalists inside every state institution regardless of competence. The result is predictable: Transnet collapsed, SAA burns through bailouts, and water treatment works poison the towns they serve. Potholes in our roads are often so large that entire cars fall into them. The state is a machine for moving wealth upward to politically connected insiders while public services rot. The latest Social Research Foundation poll puts the ANC at 32 percent nationally and 22 percent in Johannesburg, behind the DA in the city it ran for most of the past thirty years. Thirty years of dependency grants, captured media, and patronage networks still make rational exit costly for millions of South Africans. The question remains: How is it possible that people walking through their own shit to collect buckets of drinking water are still voting for this party of criminals? That 32% should be 0%.

I received a report โ€“ we carried out two missile strikes, destroying two Russian Su-34s and hitting an Iskander launcher. Thank you, guys, for this result! Another aspect of our anti-ballistic work is the packages of interceptors, primarily for Patriots, that our partners can provide us. They must protect lives. We now have intel about the Russians preparing new ballistic missile attacks. We need the capabilities to shoot down this Russian evil and are awaiting the decisions. Thank you to everyone who really helps us!

Russian forces have begun taking civilians from occupied Oleshky to Russia, apparently disregarding previously announced agreements governing the operation. The operations are being conducted by the Russian military, without American representatives or teams from either sideโ€™s ombudsman office present. Russiaโ€™s state news agency TASS is openly filming the operation. There is no indication that civilians are being given a choice of where they wish to go. No buses or other vehicles designated to transport evacuees to Ukrainian-controlled territory are visible. The operation raises serious concerns that Russia is once again exploiting a humanitarian evacuation to forcibly transfer Ukrainian civilians. The parallels with the evacuation of Mariupolโ€™s Azovstal steel plant are disturbing. Once again, Moscow appears to be disregarding agreed procedures while controlling the fate of Ukrainian civilians.

Retired Gen. David Petraeus, former CIA director and commander of US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, says Ukraine is using more than 10,000 drones a day, and Russia about the same. He says the scale โ€œdwarfs everything that weโ€™re seeing in the Middle East right now.โ€ He adds that he doesnโ€™t think Iran has used more than 10,000 drones in the entire conflict. Petraeus describes spending hours in Ukrainian operations centers covered with screens. โ€œA little red light comes on when they actually see a Russian soldier. Theyโ€™ll put that on the big screen and follow it until the end,โ€ he says. โ€œAnd it does not end well for a Russian soldier, I can tell you.โ€

On this night in 1937, my native country Belarus lost more than a hundred members of its intelligentsia. In a single night! On the night of October 29โ€“30, 1937, 108 prominent Belarusians were executed by firing squad in Minsk. Among them were scholars, cultural figures, and writers - poets, prose authors, and translators. In that single night, the Soviet regime in Moscow deprived Belarus of individuals who could have profoundly shaped our culture and language. Every year, Belarusians commemorate these horrific events, referring to them as the "Night of the Executed Poets." In total, approximately 500 writers were subjected to repression in Belarus during the rule of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, and around 2,000 across the entire USSR. The consequences of this blow are still felt today.

Lavrentiy Beria โ€“ The Strategist Look at this face. Round glasses, a gentle, serious look โ€“ a student who reads too much and cares too much. Put him in a seminar on social justice today, and nobody would look twice. He would have the right words, the right causes and the certainty of being on the right side of history. That is how it starts โ€“ not with cruelty, but with certainty. This is the young Lavrentiy Beria. At twenty-two, he joined the secret police. A quarter of a century later, at Yalta, Stalin reportedly introduced him to Roosevelt as "my Himmler." It sounded like a joke. It was a job description. He rose the way careers rise in a system of lies: by flattery. In Georgia, Stalin's homeland, he published a history of the Bolsheviks in the Caucasus that put Stalin at its center. Stalin noticed. In 1938, he was brought to Moscow to clean up after Yezhov, who had killed in a frenzy. The machine was devouring itself, and the country was exhausted. The mass shootings stopped. Some prisoners were even released, and people breathed again. Then Beria arrested Yezhov's men, and Yezhov himself. The terror did not end. It became efficient. In March 1940, he sent Stalin a short memo. The Polish officers, policemen and officials held in Soviet camps were, he wrote, "hardened, incorrigible enemies of Soviet power." He proposed to shoot them โ€“ without trial, without even hearing them. Stalin signed, and the Politburo with him. That spring, about 22,000 Poles were shot in the back of the head, in the forest of Katyn and in other places. At one of the sites, a single executioner shot thousands of them himself. We will meet him next. Many of the dead were reservists: doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers. The elite of a nation, killed by memo. That was the strategy: without its elite, a nation can be ruled by anyone. Five years later, Moscow's men were ruling Poland. Then came the second crime: the lie. For almost fifty years, Moscow said the Germans had done it. At Nuremberg, Soviet prosecutors even charged the Germans with it. In communist Poland, the truth could cost you your career. Moscow admitted it only in 1990. The shooting took a few weeks. The lie took half a century. During the war, he deported entire nations โ€“ the Chechens, the Ingush, the Crimean Tatars and others. Men, women, children and the old were loaded onto trains within days. He reported the numbers to Stalin like a delivery. A large share of them died on the way or in the first years of exile. He ran the camps as an economy. After Hiroshima, Stalin put him in charge of building the Soviet bomb. He delivered it in four years, with spies in America and prisoners in the uranium mines. At night, his car cruised the streets of Moscow. His bodyguards later testified that he picked out young women and had them brought to him. As each one left, she was handed a bouquet of flowers. Taking it meant she had consented. Refusing it meant arrest. In the system of the Lie, even rape came with a bouquet. When Stalin died in 1953, the strategist moved first โ€“ as a reformer. He pushed through an amnesty for over a million prisoners โ€“ common criminals, not political ones. He announced that the doctors accused in Stalin's last invented plot were innocent, and that their confessions had been obtained by methods forbidden by Soviet law. The chief torturer denounced torture. Nobody knew better what needed reforming. His colleagues knew him too, and none of them wanted to end up on his list. In June 1953, at a meeting in the Kremlin, Marshal Zhukov and a group of officers arrested him. The strategist had been outplayed by the colleague everyone underestimated: Khrushchev. Beria was tried in secret, without a defense, and charged โ€“ among other things โ€“ with spying for Britain. The line attributed to him was "Show me the man, and I will find you the crime." They found his. He was sentenced and shot on the same day. The verdict, as always, had come first. Then the system did to him what he had done to so many: it erased him. Subscribers to the Great Soviet Encyclopedia received a letter telling them to cut out the pages on Beria and paste in the new ones enclosed โ€“ a longer article on the Bering Strait. The man who erased millions was replaced by the Bering Strait. Today, it takes one click. And there is always a young man in round glasses, sure he is on the right side of history.
The Butchers โ€“ The Men Who Ran the Soviet Terror. Moscow, a winter night in 1937. Long past midnight in the Kremlin, a man with a pipe sits at his desk under a lamp. In front of him, a stack of typed lists โ€“ names, one per line. He runs a blue pencil down the pages. A tick. A note in the margin. Sometimes a name crossed out, sometimes one added. The same pencil he uses to edit film scripts and poems. His officials stay awake at home, next to the phone, in case he calls before dawn. Hundreds of lists. Tens of thousands of names. On a single day, December 12, 1937, he and Molotov approved more than three thousand death sentences. Then, historians tell us, they went to watch a film. But Stalin didn't invent the machine. He perfected it. In August 1918, Lenin sent a telegram to his comrades: hang at least a hundred kulaks โ€“ hang them so that people see it for hundreds of kilometers around. Trotsky, the "good communist" of Western nostalgia, ordered the families of officers taken as hostages. The founders gave the orders. Then the machine needed men โ€“ men who would build the apparatus, fill the camps, write the confessions and pull the triggers. And sooner or later, it devoured many of them. 1. Dzerzhinsky โ€“ the Founder. "Iron Felix," a Polish noble's son, who built the Cheka in 1917. 2. Trotsky โ€“ the Myth. The revolutionary Western intellectuals still romanticize, who wrote a whole book defending terror โ€“ until the machine he helped build killed him with an ice axe. 3. Stalin โ€“ the Editor. The man at the desk, with the blue pencil, long past midnight. 4. Yagoda โ€“ the Builder. The Gulag as an economy: canals dug by prisoners who died by the tens of thousands. Then shot by his own machine. 5. Vyshinsky โ€“ the Prosecutor. "Confession is the queen of evidence" โ€“ so he got confessions. "Shoot the mad dogs!" at the show trials, then the Soviet seat at the United Nations. 6. Yezhov โ€“ the Butcher. The Great Terror, the quotas, the Polish operation โ€“ then shot, and erased from the photographs. 7. Beria โ€“ the Strategist. Katyn, the atomic bomb, the deportations โ€“ and a predator. Shot by his own colleagues three months after Stalin's death. 8. Blokhin โ€“ the Executioner. In the spring of 1940, at Kalinin, he personally shot thousands of Polish prisoners over a few weeks, in a leather apron and cap. 9. Serov โ€“ the Hunter of Poland. He crushed the Home Army, lured the leaders of the Polish Underground State to "talks" and had them tried in Moscow. Then Hungary in 1956, and the first chairman of the KGB. 10. Andropov โ€“ the Modernizer. Dissidents sent to psychiatric hospitals instead of camps: softer, quieter โ€“ same goal: erasing people. The first secret police chief to rule the country. 11. Epilogue โ€“ The Chekists Never Left. From the KGB to the FSB to the Kremlin. Why name them? Because their whole work was erasure โ€“ of people, of records, of memory. Remembering is the opposite of what they did. And erasure didn't die with them. Today it rarely needs a bullet. It is called cancelling, deplatforming, debanking, lawfare. The inconvenient person isn't shot โ€“ he is removed: from his job, his bank account, his platform, the conversation. Yezhov needed a retoucher. Today a terms-of-service update does the job. For Poles, these are not names from a history book. They are the names behind our grandparents' graves โ€“ and that is why we recognize their heirs.
