While Otto and I are Out West with Pad and @NeilFultonSD chasing Black Hills elk, @lori_koenecke and the Girls are with Lola in Pierre. Lori was on stage last night at TFRiggs accompanying the Chorus’ fall concert! They’ve been working hard this fall on some difficult music!

By all accounts it was a successful Opening Day at Wilbur’s Land. Lori made some great rolls this morning. Yoa had a great day and even little Otto was good. My guy Rex two fisting the scotchy bars was one of the highlights.

Last week a sharp eyed reader caused me to overexpand on the differences between prairie chickens and sharp tail grouse. Today’s bag included a sharp tail and so here are the side by side pics. Bars and bare feet are prairie chicken. Chevrons and feathered feet are sharp tails.

He’s directly over the target. We need to focus resources on exceptional people and goals and objectives rather than marginal ones
.@SecRubio: "Too often, these days, we build downwards. We design our standards to ensure that no one will lose. We preoccupy ourselves more with the comfort of the worst than the potential of the best. We hold the most exceptional things among us hostage to the average."

No South Dakota kid should get out of high school without knowing this story
April 6, 1967. Seaman Apprentice Doug Hegdahl, 20 years old, a farm kid from South Dakota, is on deck of the cruiser USS Canberra in the Gulf of Tonkin at night when a 5-inch gun fires. The blast knocks him overboard. He treads water for hours until Vietnamese fishermen pull him out. He ends up in the Hanoi Hilton. His interrogators can't believe a sailor just fell off a ship, so they assume he's a commando. Hegdahl figures out his best chance is to act dumb. He plays the bumpkin. He pretends he can't read or write. They assign a guard to teach him. He never learns. They give up and nickname him "The Incredibly Stupid One." Then they let him wander the camp almost freely. It was the worst mistake they ever made with him. With an Air Force officer coaching him, Hegdahl memorized the names, capture dates and personal details of about 256 fellow prisoners. He locked them in his head by singing them to the tune of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm," over and over. He talked the guards into taking him into Hanoi for new glasses and memorized the route. He also put dirt in the fuel tanks of five North Vietnamese trucks. The POWs had a rule: nobody accepts early release. They made one exception. When Hanoi offered to free Hegdahl for propaganda in 1969, his senior officer ordered him to go. He walked out with 256 names in his head. For hundreds of families, it was the first proof their men were alive. The North Vietnamese had sent home the most dangerous man in the camp.

The new worship teams at LMC are apparently getting a bit competitive. This race to the top could go anywhere but either way I’m here for the ride.

A very happy National Daughters Day to these two young ladies. Our pride and joy, all at the same time even, sometimes anyway. Thanks to @billvancamp for the picture, taken tonight in DC.

I don’t care about the trees but I’m here for the “pert near”
Replying to @brianonhere
Crazy to think about those trees just sitting back there for pert near a century just waiting to be discovered. I guess things can get real tense out there in the woods too, rival crews, firearms, etc. Great movie premise IMO let’s get McConaughey out there facing off with Brolin

The pattern repeats, yet so many can’t seem to see it.
The Greenland deal is Classic Trump 101: start with the wild ask — “we should own Greenland” — get everybody freaking out, and then negotiate toward what you really want. And what did he want? A bigger, permanent U.S. security footprint in Greenland and a way to keep China and Russia out. You can hate the style, but this is how he deals: start huge, create leverage, then land the part you actually came for. #Greenland @realDonaldTrump
