Artisanal mining is a disaster for biodiversity. Or is it? Our new paper in @CommsEarth presents some surprising results from a mining rush involving 10s of 1000s of people searching for sapphires in a new PA in Madagascar's eastern rainforests.

🎓@COFOregonState's @JacobBukoski: "Earlier research showed that 🏄♀️ #Surf breaks tend to be 👐 biodiversity hotspots, but no one had looked at the stocks of carbon held within these ecosystems –carbon that could drive #ClimateChange if disturbed and lost"

Our paper is now out... considering how population decline, ageing and rural-to-urban migration can have extensive implications for biodiversity and the socio-cultural relationships between people and nature. @JAppliedEcology @developmentuea besjournals.onlinelibrary.wi…
New study out today!
"Co-occurrence of surf breaks and carbon-dense ecosystems suggests opportunities for coastal conservation"

Moreover, prior work by our coauthor team has shown that global surf breaks tend to coincide with biodiverse areas, such as coral reefs.
Our study brings a new climate-mitigation angle to the improved stewardship of global coastal regions.

See our new paper on how to determine when you need to collect more data ... surprisingly, more data often has little value for decisions ... our paper unravels the mystery as to why "Value of Information Analyses" often yield surprising results doi.org/10.1111/2041-210X.14…
