This photo of the only encampment I've personally seen in Astoria in the 14 years I've lived here is from at least six months ago. It's unclear to me what prompted Michael Rapaport to tweet about it now.
ASTORIA, QUEENS IS A DISGRACE. Homeless encampments, open drug use, public urination, human feces, nudity, tents and garbage blocking sidewalks. Parents with strollers and people in wheelchairs can’t even get through. Kids are witnessing this on their way to SCHOOL and PLAYGROUNDS. Hundreds of complaints. Residents begging for help. And according my sources to residents, the NYPD has its hands tied while the city offers shelter and allows the encampments to remain. ZORON THE MORON, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? New Yorkers deserve CLEAN, SAFE STREETS. This is unacceptable.

Zohran Mamdani launched his mayoral campaign two years ago today. @PeterSterne interviewed him at the time. And it's remarkable how decarceration has not been the mayor's focus, at all, in office.

The mayor appointed criminal justice reformer Chris Watler to serve as chair of the Board of Correction today. Watler will lead oversight efforts as the city attempts to close Rikers Island and continues to deal with unabated violence in the jails. queenseagle.com/all/2026/10/…

Mamdani supported Orkin throughout his primary run against Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar without ever formally granting endorsement, as @petersterne reported. Kind of funny to do that now, as he faces underfunded Republican opposition in a safe blue Queens district.
I am proud to endorse David Orkin for Assembly District 38. David will be a tireless champion for our affordability agenda in Albany. We’re 46 days out from Election Day; will you help us get out the vote? Election Day is November 3. Early Voting begins on October 24th and runs through November 1st. Exclusive 🚨 Last year, @Documentedny visited a playground in Queens where day laborers expressed fear about the incoming Trump administration. Those fears came to a head on Sep. 1, when ICE raided the playground and arrested eight. New form me. documentedny.com/2026/09/16/…

In a scathing letter to a judge, Rikers' federal monitor says he has "grave concerns" that top DOC officials are "actively engaging in efforts to evade transparency and impede cooperation and collaboration" with the monitor and remediation manager.

The monitor took particular issue with a message sent to top staffers on behalf of DOC Commish Stanley Richards – "No idea, strategy or work is to be communicated to the remediation manager, monitor or City Hall without [Richards] being briefed beforehand," it said.

The monitor said the directive would "impede the free flow of information and communication necessary to advance the reform effort," adding it was among the "most specific, direct, and consequential actions the MT has observed to undermine the court’s orders."
