Also: employment status didn't relate to quality of life in autistic adults. I'd like to see deep mixed methods study on that. What socio-economic resources (family, disability benefits, etc) did unemployed people have, & how related? Work may be stressful sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
New study: higher social participation was only associated w/ better quality of life for autistic adults w/ lower levels of anxiety. This relates to the vicious cycle I and other autistic ppl face when attempts to interact when highly anxious backfire. 1/ sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

I don’t mind people thinking autism and ADHD are overdiagnosed if they are able to tell me how much autism and ADHD there is supposed to be, explain why that’s the correct amount and show me evidence that diagnosis rates outstrip that

Autistic people are criticised for catastrophizing. The problem is not that we are wrong; thanks to our pattern recognition abilities, our predictions are usually spot on. The real issue is that we typically highlight issues that are supposed to remain hidden.

CBT for anxiety is in essence, about exposure, exposure, exposure The same work for anxiety in autistic people will likely make them worse. They need first -understanding the sensory profile and finding soothing sensory strategies -environment adaptations -learning their “energy battery” and planning on what activities it's worth using to avoid overwhelm Then maybe exposure, if still needed PS: post inspired by seeing several autistic people who said that CBT didn't work for them Still learning on the topic, sharing of experiences is greatly appreciated

Since about 70% of autistic people have ADHD as well, it seems the predominant neurotype is actually AuDHD; autism without ADHD is a much rarer occurrence. This fact concerns me quite a bit with respect to the research literature.

Here’s to the neurodivergent women who were always told they were too weird or too loud. To those who dared to be themselves in a world that demanded conformity, your uniqueness is your strength. #InternationalWomensDay

The Trust involved here is not alone • Short term care • Poor recognition of the nature of SMI • Failure to engage *with* patients • Poor continuity between ward and community •Poor understanding of the MHA •Unrealistic expectations of GPs •And a lack of compassion
This goes entirely against the ethos of my field Assertive Outreach Even a rudimentary understanding of severe mental illness is enough to know that some people who are very ill either can’t/won’t engage Engagement is a two way street and removing support is simply unethical

Being a perfectionist in a culture that surrounds you with examples of perfection and demands the same of you is normal, not a personality disorder. So disappointed that @AFNCCF @NHS put their names to this. Just awful 4/4

You don’t understand why a diagnosis means so much to us, but that’s because you didn’t go your entire life wondering why you were different, and being excluded, shamed, mocked and misunderstood because of it. Diagnosis literally saved my life.

One of the consequences of the NHS being so underfunded and overstretched is vulnerable and gravely ill patients with multiple physical and mental health problems having to coordinate their own incredibly complex care between specialisms that won't speak or write to each other.

There's nothing economically sound about the current system of denying disabled people benefits and then spending millions to defend that denial on appeals. It would be cheaper for them to just give everyone the support they need, but no, the ideology of cruelty trumps economics.

Let's be unequivocally clear: "All schools should provide: Unrestricted access to a toilet, whenever the need arises. This means no school should have a policy of not allowing learners to use the toilet during lesson times." eric.org.uk/school-toilet-ch…

The reality is, when you go through the medical records of those diagnosed with personality disorder, chances are you won’t find a thorough assessment which evidences the diagnosis So this conversation about criteria is already beyond that poor level of assessment
Here's a thread no one has asked for looking at this from the recent #RCPsychIC conference. Is it BPD or CPTSD? Let's have a look 👇👇👇

NEW: Campaigners are planning legal action after NHS chiefs in Yorkshire imposed limits on adults getting referrals for autism and ADHD assessments Critics fear the move will deny NHS assessments to all but the most severe cases By me, for the Big Issue bigissue.com/news/adhd-and-a…
