Just been to @TescoMiddleton where all these Calatheas are dying. Asked about them being reduced, was flat out refused and informed "customers can choose to buy full price in that conditon"..for £12?! ...wonder if they take the same approach to food... #wasteful #plantwaste

Great to be at this year’s careers event to current life science undergrads at @Uni_of_Essex Cannot fathom that I started my own undergrad 10 years ago and since then have transitioned from “I only want to be in the lab” to “data science is my passion, I love working from home”

My advice: - Enjoy every moment, take opportunities as you never know who/what might open up your world - Look for a supportive environment - especially important when you’re first starting - If you want to change the world, broaden your horizons! Don’t just look at academia

Been thinking about this recently as I’m participating in a career talk at the end of the week for my undergrad department at @Uni_of_Essex which I started in 10 years ago 😳 Can you give career advice when all you’ve done is plodded along trying to work out what to do next? 🤪

social media health messages need to give the gist in a few seconds: Measles: -is one of the most contagious diseases -can be fatal or cause disability or suppress the immune system - has no treatment - can be prevented by vaccines -vaccines are safe and DO NOT cause autism
#Vaccines are the best possible defence against #measles, #mumps and #rubella. Make sure your child gets both doses of the #MMR vaccine to protect them and others from these serious diseases. More: nhs.uk/MMR #VaccinesWork

I agree with everything in this thread, the QA process in academic (in my experience) was pretty poor in hindsight, and quite often data science work is lead by supervisors who have never written a line of code! What’s the solution when academics already have so little time?

Had the pleasure of attending the #fieldservice @UKHSA away day last week at @surreycricket As a geographically diverse division, it’s lovely to see some faces in person! 🥰

The Gastrointestinal tracker was the first major project I worked on as part of the Regions Data Science team, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Congratulations to all the speakers and people who contributed a poster which made for an excellent event.

Just had mine ☺️💉
Flu and COVID-19 spread more easily in winter and can cause serious harm to those more vulnerable. Get winter strong – check if you're eligible and book your vaccination now. 📅 Book at nhs.uk/seasonalvaccinations or via the NHS App. #GetWinterStrong

🧵 Has the pleasure of taking part in the @UKHSA #hackathon organised by our software community of practise. I would recommend anyone working with data/coding in any capacity to take part in a hackathon.

I learnt so much and had a great time working with people in my organisation I potentially wouldn’t cross paths with! We were tasked with word scraping PDF files of academic reviews to pull out studies included in the papers, something I had no experience in.

We also experimented with the idea of using AI technology, which you’ve guessed it, I have no experience in! Thank you to my team Simon, Soeren and Layla 😊

My team decided to use python, a language I also have no experience in! And I integrated this code into a simple shiny app to make it more accessible for users with no coding experience.

The dashboard made in #rshiny was launched last week, and is my first major project since starting the role. Very proud this piece of work will inform surveillance in the population and decision making for GI diseases in England🚀
