SANTA FE INSTITUTE POSTDOC CALL
Oct 13
Emergence, new theories of computation, physics of information, scaling + micro-macro, collective intelligence, AI+AGI, robustness, evolvability, causality, consciousness. . . there is no better place to do a postdoc then @sfiscience.
I did my postdoc at SFI years ago. To have had it as an option was life changing from an intellectual standpoint.
If you like to collaborate, have a complex systems research vision + want a postdoc that is basically a junior faculty position, please apply.

Antarctic sea ice extent *today* is over 6 standard deviations below the mean and falling rapidly (red line is this year), but both the government & official opposition in Westminster are competing to be the ones most willing to cut climate-saving regulations. @EliotJacobson – at Israel

Dear councils, 97% of UK meadows are gone. So if you have wildflowers like ox-eye daisies on roadverges and in public spaces, don't spray them with weedkiller or over-mow them. Let's give pollinating insects like bees and butterflies a chance 🐝

Today is #NationalMeadowsDay! 🥳 The loss of our uplifting hay meadow habitats in the UK makes my heart hurt, so I want to share with you the secret for turning your lawn into a mini wildflower meadow for *free* 👊

What fascinates me most is the rate of marking: 1 exam per hour. When modules have 200 students, that is 5 wks of constant marking at 8 hours per day. This is not in academic workloads, and only surfaces when they try to replace our effort. thetab.com/uk/bristol/2023/0… #ucuRISING

Please don't turn your lawn into plastic. Plastic grass reduces food & shelter for wildlife such as bees & butterflies; has a high carbon footprint; sheds micro-plastics which wash into our rivers and seas. Create a wildlife-friendly space instead. More bit.ly/3wE67P8 🐝

A couple of days ago this embankment on the edge to the @KeeleUniversity sports field was full of wild flowers, now it's desolate. Why? It's a unused embankment! #greenkeele my arse. Makes of joke of their award for "sustainability university of the year".

A bumblebee can only fly for about 40 minutes between feeding. But we've lost 97% of our wiłdflower meadows. So each nectar-rich flower you plant in a windowbox or in your garden or community green spaces could be the pit stop that saves a bee 🐝

Shout out to grasses this #NoMowMay 💚🌿
Grasses are a hugely important food source for many moth caterpillars such as the Large Yellow Underwing, and provide breeding areas for butterflies such as the Gatekeeper and Meadow Brown.
