Legendary short-seller, @Carson_C_Block, built his career—and his reputation—shorting stocks. So why does his fund own 14% of a Canadian junior gold miner? Full interview on YouTube: youtu.be/vp9xLWoWj-4
Great read and great news. With the PE bubble collapsing perhaps we'll see young ppl start building real businesses again instead of excel models and useless SAS products.
PE was a path to guaranteed money for long enough that people assumed it would always be a path to guaranteed money, making it increasingly prestigious.
But prestige is a indicator of where the world went, not a forecast for where the world is going.

Canada is (coming) back.
Imagine going back to October 2024 and telling Canadian oil & gas execs:
- Trudeau, Guilbeault Eby gone
- Strait of Hormuz war, WTI > $100
- Liberals adopted energy superpower agenda
- New west coast oil pipeline designated in national interest
- TMX full
- Keystone XL/ Southbow Bridger moving forward
- Conservative BC government
- LNG Canada Phase 2 FID’d
- Natural gas gigascale data centres FID’d
- Emissions cap scrapped, IAA removed from almost all O&G projects
- 100% immediate and permanent expensing for capital investments

89% percent of baby boomers back higher taxes on younger Americans as a means to protect their Social Security benefits.
84% of those aged 55 to 64 also support tax hikes on young Americans who, on average, suffer an inferior quality of life to their parents.

This is outrageous.
The man who violently stabbed and brutally murdered a father in broad daylight outside a Starbucks in downtown Vancouver has been found guilty not of second-degree murder (for which he was charged) but of merely manslaughter.
A conviction that carries with it no mandatory jail time at all.
The killer, Inderdeep Singh Gosal, could literally be back on the streets in just a matter of months.
This is part of a trend in Canada of judges who rule that stabbing or shooting someone in the face, neck, or chest somehow doesn’t “prove” intent to kill.
If judges are unwilling to use common sense, maybe it’s time for the government to consider new legislation to ensure that they do!
To be fair, considerably better than Trudeau’s son Xavier rap… he’s probably stepping down to run federally.

In Canada, our highest marginal tax rate is just above the median income required to qualify to buy a home. So the lowest level of income to qualify to get a mortgage is the same level the Carney government considers you ultra wealthy and takes over 53% of your marginal income. A large part of this is the massive debasement from the Bank of Canada printing money at the highest level among the G7. This inflated home prices, while wages and marginal tax rates remained in tact.
Canada’s brain drain is brutal. I can count 15 founders I know personally who left. (per @UWaterloo researchers, it’s specifically the top percentile of students that leave).
No one is asking me for a solution, to be clear, but I have one suggestion.
The simple, obvious, Canada-must-change this immediately: uncompetitive marginal tax rates.
Many Canadians don’t realize that Canada asks high earners and founders to pay top marginal rates at much lower income levels than even the highest-tax U.S. jurisdictions like NYC or California.
The top marginal tax rates in Canada are above 50% in Ontario (53.5%), Quebec (53.3%), and BC (53.5%), with Alberta slightly below (48%).
Meanwhile, even in the highest tax jurisdictions of California and NYC, the top marginal tax rate sits lower at 50.3%, and 52%, respectively.
But it gets worse. Much worse.
These high marginal rates in the U.S. hit at commensurately high levels of income ($25M in NYC, $1M in Cali).
Canada’s highest marginal rate? That started at the highest federal income threshold of $218K for the 2025 tax year.
$218K!!!??? (In CAD too. Thats about $157K in USD).
That means the marginal tax rate for similarly-earning Americans in the highest-tax jurisdictions like California and NYC is actually around 45%.
So Canadians pay significantly higher tax rates at lower levels of income.
And it’s not close, even when compared to the highest-tax U.S. jurisdictions (which themselves are losing hundreds of thousands of builders).
It’s obviously more nuanced than just tax, but this is one way to start solving this problem.
Let the brightest, hardest-working and highest-earning Canadians keep more of what they earn.
