I look forward to supporting High Commissioner @BarhamSalih in this new chapter for UNHCR and the people we serve.
I very warmly welcome the election of @BarhamSalih as the next @UN High Commissioner for refugees and wish him and UNHCR all the very best!
โThe events in Gaza are taking place against a backdrop of 75 years of displacement. 75 years of failure to find a just and lasting solution to the plight of Palestine Refugees,โ @UNLazzarini.
Powerful words on the devastating reality in Gaza.
I arrived at the Global Refugee Forum straight from #Gaza & I have to say, it is a living hell.
People of Gaza are running out of time & options as they face bombardment, deprivation & disease in an ever-ever-shrinking space.

Appalled by horrendous events of past 48hrs in #Gaza.
Killings of so many in schools-turned-shelters, amid fleeing of hundreds from Al-Shifa Hospital & ongoing displacement in southern Gaza, wholly inconsistent with protection of civilians required under international law.
We are profoundly saddened by this tragedy. The preventable death of an asylum seeker underscores the pressing need for action by all levels of government to prevent further risks, especially as winter temperatures set in.
#NEW: Peel region officials are calling on the federal government for assistance after an asylum seeker died this week sleeping in a tent outside a former shelter in Mississauga.

"The solution to this situation is the end of the occupation, and full respect for the right to self-determination for Palestinians. As I have said time and again, for the violence to end, the occupation needs to end," @volker_turk.
