If the Packers trade for Jonathan Taylor, it means they are moving on from Josh Jacobs.
Here's the complexity:
Josh Jacobs was never suspended. As such he currently qualifies for 100% termination pay - Meaning if released and he doesn't sign with another team the Packers will still owe and cap 100% of his $10.2m base salary. Only savings would be from not having to pay $41,176/game active the rest of the season.
The Packers could release Jacobs for conduct detrimental to the team - but an arbitrator would have to conclude his conduct was so severe it would warrant more than a 4 game suspension for the Packers to not be on the hook for termination pay. A bit of a financial gamble. Packers certainly would have to hedge elsewhere, likely in a Jordan Love restructure and/or a Jonathan Taylor restructure after the trade to cover the $5.67m in remaining base salary cost if the arbitration doesn't go their way.
The Packers don't have enough cap space to trade for Taylor, release Jacobs and pay his termination pay, and get through the rest of the season without restructuring or trading away other contracts. At this point in the season the only single meaningful contract to restructure would be Jordan Love ($3.83m). All others have small base salaries, but combined could scrap together a few million.
If Packers use his conduct as the reason for the release and the league does eventually suspend him 4+ games (including time served on exempt list) then the Packers would see cap relief - around $5.67m in base salary relief and $535k in per-game bonuses (plus the base salary for the number of weeks suspended).
Trades that were all but done for the Packers:
Archie Manning in the 70's
Randy Moss in 2007
Tony Gonzalez 2008
Marshawn Lynch in 2010
Khalil Mack in 2018
Chase Claypool in 2022
Josh Sweat in August
Jonathan Taylor the latest hot name
Give me MN over DET. Who's scarier? The Vikings don't elicit fear of any kind, I don't care if it puts them at 10-0. It's 2022 all over again. DET has a lot more to offer and worry about.
If you’re a #Packers fan here’s who to root for today while you’re stress free Sunday
Lions over Vikings (unfortunately)
Chargers over Rams
Cardinals over Cowboys
It's. Not. The. Long. Snapper. The kid, today right now, is not an NFL kicker. It's as much about the mental aspect of kicking in the league as it is the physical ability to put it through the uprights. Too high variance - you can't excuse it away
This isn't the season to trade high assets for a non-premium position and when that player still won't make a difference because the OL can't run block to save their lives
The Packers' trade interest in Jonathan Taylor is real, according to a source. Here's more on Taylor (and Josh Jacobs). ⬇️

So the NFL is like that banker guy on "Deal Or No Deal?" where there is a cryptic figure who calls in, decides who can or can't return to the field? Not the doctors who understand medical risk. The league? And we're comparing the severity of a broken rib to blood clots?
Here is a perfect example of why @MikeWahle68 is always a first listen for me and should be working for an NFL team - incredible context to how and why this play went down like it did
#packers HC with great call to dial up Kraft for a chunk play, but Watson is commanding the ball right now. There are consequences for missing these wide open throws in favor of taking your shots - but when WR1 is playing at this level...this is a bizarre way to defend this BTW

I asked @MarkEckel08 if, in his years covering the NFL, he had ever seen a player leave in an ambulance and return to play in the same game. "Never"
