I'm a history teacher, and here is my analysis of the last 55 years. The modern American political mess didn’t appear overnight. It began when Nixon and Ford gutted the healthcare system. Instead of fixing a collapsing model, Carter created the Department of Education — triggering a backlash from religious and anti‑science factions who wanted schools to teach fantasy instead of reality. Those groups unified and marched behind Reagan in 1980. They are the same forgotten people who marched in Madison Square Garden dressed as Nazis in 1940. Now, the most important sectors of society are in shambles for most people in the U.S. Reagan then restructured the economy by exporting industrial production, empowering a financial elite, and converting national savings into massive debt. Individual credit became the lifeline of a hollowed‑out system — a lifeline that snapped in 2008, destroying millions of lives. Forty trillion dollars later, the U.S. still struggles to impose its will on a small country it has sanctioned for half a century, after the successive humiliations of losing in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, a radicalized movement occupies power and intends to stay there. If they lose in November — assuming they do — nothing suggests they’ll accept it. Their long‑planned strategy to entrench themselves is already visible. Meanwhile, the Democratic opposition seems unable to match the scale of the threat. Figures like Paxton, DeSantis, Cruz, Tuberville, Kennedy, and Boebert push the country toward extremism while their opponents are paralyzed by fear of violence from the regime. The trajectory is bleak: a fractured nation, weakened institutions, and a political fascist minority imposing its agenda while the majority hesitates and pretends nothing is happening. If the U.S. cannot defend its own democratic foundations, it risks collapsing under its contradictions and being forced to rebuild from the ashes of internal conflict. People like Trump always bring millions with them in their violent downfall; he is no different from Hitler, Mao, Stalin, or Lenin.
