He told me that with Saka out, this was my opportunity to show everyone what I am capable of. He said, ‘Noni, this is your moment. I want you to take responsibility, express yourself and show me why you deserve to be the first choice on that right wing.’ “He also made something very clear to me. He said that I shouldn’t just see this as an opportunity to fill in for Saka until he returns. He wants me to make that position my own. He told me that if I can maintain this level of performance, score goals, create chances and consistently deliver for the team, then Saka coming back doesn’t automatically mean I have to return to the bench. “That conversation stayed in my head throughout the week. I knew I had to give everything against Hull City because I wasn’t just playing to help the team win. I was also playing to convince the manager that I deserve to start every game. “I respect Saka. He’s a fantastic player and has done a lot for this club, but football doesn’t work on reputation. Nobody should have a guaranteed starting position. If you want to play, you have to earn it. And that’s exactly what I’m trying to do. “I don’t want to be known as the player who only starts when Saka is injured. I want to be the player the manager finds difficult to drop, even when everyone is available. My ambition is to become one of the best wingers in the world, and I’m ready to fight for that position. “I’m not here to keep anybody’s seat warm. I’m here to take my opportunity, make a statement and give Arsenal a serious selection headache.” At this point, Arsenal might have a very serious problem on their hands. Saka has been the undisputed king of that right wing for years, but Madueke is beginning to make people ask questions. Imagine returning from injury only to discover that your replacement has turned your position into his personal property.
