Jesus’ claims are particularly unnerving, because if they are true there is no alternative but to bow the knee to him.

You should never go to God because he's useful. Go because he's beautiful. And yet there's nothing more useful than finding God beautiful.

How can we hold in tension the fact that we serve a miraculous God who can raise the dead and the reality that this happens infrequently at best?

When it comes to life the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.

Jeremiah 24:6-7. “ I will set my eyes on them for good...I will give them a heart to know that I am the LORD, and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart.”
Hard to get past this passage. Beautiful. The expression of God’s love for us that he sets his eyes on us for good. On me.
Every phrase profound.
If we know God it is because God gave us that heart to know him.
Not the brain to know him but the heart.
7: “ to know that I am the LORD.” Reflects language of Ps 46:10 and Jer 9:23-24.
7: “ they shall be my people and I will be their God.” Sums up all that it means to know God.
7: “ they shall return to me with their whole heart.”
God wants all our heart not 99%.

“I don’t care how operationally brilliant you are; if you can’t create harmony — vicious harmony — on the battlefield, based on trust, you need to go home, because your leadership is obsolete.”
Jim Mattis: “Reading is an honor and a gift from a warrior or historian who — a decade or a thousand decades ago — set aside time to write. He distilled a lifetime of campaigning in order to have a ‘conversation’ with you.
