Thrilled to announce Roads to Removal, a bottom up analysis of USA #CDR capacity/cost. W *county-level* resolution! We can remove 1 billion tons of CO2/yr by 2050 (or more!)—every region has ways to contribute to our success.

Do deeply rooted grasses put more carbon in the ground? "Sometimes you've gotta rent a van and drive around the country..." So said Eric Slessarev & team in this new study. 12 sites in central/eastern USA...

all with 10yr+ old switchgrass fields, next to business-as-usual annual crops. All with #radiocarbon measurements down to 1 meter. Expect more SOC in the perennial grass soils? or a correlation with pH, climate, mineralogy? Read it & find out.
(Hint: its all about the roots!)

Had a fabulous time meeting with C-CoMP members last week at our Annual Meeting in Woods Hole. Thanks for all the great discussions 🧪🌊🦠💻🚢🌎! We are looking forward to an exciting year of investigating bioreactive molecules within the marine chemical-microbial network!

ALT Group photo of C-CoMP members who attended the 2025 C-CoMP Annual meeting in-person and remotely. 50 people gather together at the front of a meeting room at WHOI. The people in the first row sit in chairs while the other two rows stand behind them. An image of the remote attendees is superimposed on the wall behind the in-person attendees. Microbiome sequencing has come so far. In my PhD I used TRFLP…& now doing longreads of entire soil metagenomes! This review was great fun- thx Gitta Szabó Emiley Eloe-Fadrosh Tanja Woyke @jgi

The EPA cited my paper in their argument against the endangerment finding today. However, their point is completely backwards: my paper actually supports the EPA's 2009 range of 1.8C to 4C warming by 2100. nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

This is unbelievably bad. I am astonished that the Senate language got WORSE overnight than even the House version. This One Big Horrible Bill will raise energy costs, kill $100s of billions of new investment in energy & manufacturing, make our grid less reliable, increase pollution, and constrain our ability to compete with China for the future or AI. Total loser stuff.

We analyzed the land resources for large-scale engineered CDR in the US, accounting for demand from future electricity generation needs and demands on ag lands. Short answer: there is enough! New in One Earth doi.org/10.1016/j.oneear.202… from the roads2removal.org/ crew 😁
The *Microbes Persist* project I lead is featured in @Livermore_Lab’s new Science and Tech magazine. We’re trying to understand how genomes of tiny organisms control the creation & breakdown of soil organic matter— a critical ingredient in keeping our soils healthy and productive

🌍 Excited to share our new research on carbon-negative bioplastics—now published in Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews! We assessed the techno-economic potential for atmospheric CO2 removal via industrial-scale fermentation of lignocellulose into bioplastics 🌱 🧪 . 1/n
So humbled and honored to be on this list! With huge thanks to the folks who nominated me & have been my research compatriots in the past 2 decades.
+ delighted to read the names of some other wonderful colleagues!

The US shows how #CarbonRemoval is done - a pathway to 1GT/year by 2050.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has just published a 111-page draft report that provides a great basis for a federal #CDR strategy.
It divides #carbonremoval into the following approaches:
Technological:
• #DirectAirCapture
• Biomass with carbon removal (#BiCRS)
• CO2 mineralization
• Marine CDR
Land management:
• Forestry (including afforestation and reforestation)
• Agricultural soil carbon
(I'm still not keen on "approaches" and prefer "methodologies" from the IPCC vocab.)
It is very clear and specific regarding its scope, including how it does and does not overlap with #carboncapture and storage.
The report provides a great overview of the needs for CDR and a comprehensive list of existing federal agency initiatives, including all national laboratory CDR capabilities for research.
The suggested policy options are:
• Establishing timeline and targets (Establishing 25 million tons of capacity by 2030 is an evidence-based near-term goal, with 1 GT/yr by 2050 as a reasonable long-term goal)
• Accelerating investments in CDR research, development, and demonstration
• Further enabling frameworks
• Building private sector demand and advancing public-private partnerships
• Investing in standards for MMRV and LCA
• Developing and refining regional engagement guidance
• Engaging the international community
An impressive start and an excellent example for other governments. Let's see where it will eventually land in the current US political environment.
Comments to the draft report can be submitted until April 1st 2025.
