Building Resilient Automation: The 8 C’s of Data Quality I'm presenting at this BrightTALK session on Sep 29 2026, 1:00pm BST Automation initiatives often fail not because of technology, but due to unreliable data. Missing fields, inconsistent definitions and outdated spreadsheets create cracks in operational processes, leading to failed workflows and costly disruptions. For IT Operations, these issues mean constant firefighting instead of driving innovation, leaving businesses exposed to inefficiencies and risks. Building resilient automation systems requires more than just advanced tools. It demands a strong data foundation. Poor data quality undermines automation efforts, creating brittle systems that can’t adapt to real-world complexities. For business leaders, this challenge also presents an opportunity: by addressing data quality issues early, organizations can unlock the full potential of intelligent automation, reduce risks and drive sustainable growth. Join me to explore how the "8 C’s of Data Quality" can help you future-proof your automation strategies. Key Takeaways: - Identify the hidden risks poor data quality poses to automation and AIOps initiatives. - Learn how to spot and address common failure points in your data foundation. - Discover actionable strategies to build resilient, scalable automation systems - Explore how IT leaders can turn data quality challenges into business opportunities. - Gain insights into real-world examples of successful automation transformations You can sign up here: lnkd.in/eUSkKeKk

Google value plunges by $500bn as AI search hits ad sales. The irony - I remember delivering AI projects around the year 2000, and being told that the term 'AI' was being replaced by the term 'search technologies' because of Google's dominance. I really have lived through a whole cycle of the tech industry. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm9q…

HR installed a mandatory mood survey that appears every morning when employees log into their laptops. "How are you feeling today?" Five options: Thriving Good Okay Stressed Not Okay I helped deploy it. Here's what HR didn't tell anyone. Clicking "Thriving" immediately closes the survey. Clicking "Good" asks one follow-up question. Clicking "Okay" asks five. Clicking "Stressed" opens a 20-question wellness assessment. Clicking "Not Okay" automatically schedules a meeting with your manager and sends HR a notification. One engineer selected "Stressed" on Monday. By Wednesday he'd received three wellness emails, a mandatory resilience webinar, and an invitation to discuss his emotional availability with HR. Thursday he selected "Thriving." Last week HR presented the results at our company all-hands. EMPLOYEE HAPPINESS: 98.7% The CEO gave a standing ovation. He said this proved our investment in employee wellness was paying off. I checked the raw data. 73% of employees selected "Thriving" within two seconds of the survey appearing. They didn't even read the question. They just wanted to get to their desktop. HR asked IT to make the survey harder to dismiss so employees would engage more meaningfully. I suggested making "Not Okay" close the window immediately instead. HR said that would encourage negative responses. We aren't measuring employee happiness. We're measuring how badly people want HR to leave them alone.

Alistair Cockburn, one of the original authors of the Agile Manifesto, uses “zero votes” as a provocative description of a Scrum Master’s authority. He recalls project managers in his classes trying to direct a team while playing the Scrum Master role. His challenge to them: help the team communicate and work together without assuming the power to decide its solution. Where does that distinction become hardest to maintain on a real team? Microsoft announced 60,000 employees (H-U-G-E) are eligible for voluntary exits as the company doubles, triples and quadruples its investment in #AI. The firm is effectively laying off all these people, but the difference is the company is making a broad offer and letting employees choose whether to leave or not. I applaud this. Says MSFT: "The Voluntary Exit Offer reflects an important part of how we’re evolving our approach to change: creating greater flexibility and, where possible, more ways for employees to shape their next chapter." #Leadership #HR #Management #Layoffs

Microsoft offers voluntary exit packages to 60,000 staff. There are concerns about the institutional knowledge that leaves the building, as noted in this Yahoo article. However, in my experience of dealing with Microsoft, institutional knowledge has never been their strong suit. Decisions are often lost in the midst of time, say, about two years max; resulting in decisions that nobody understands but just accepts. It is a consequence of the 'growth mindset' that @satyanadella and others have discussed in the past. uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/mi…

I discovered a former employee named Gary has been hosting a weekly meeting for the past six years. Gary retired in 2020. His recurring calendar invite never got canceled. Every Tuesday at 2 PM, 23 employees still have a meeting called "Weekly Alignment" on their calendars. Nobody attends. Nobody knows what it was originally about. I asked why they keep accepting it. Apparently everyone uses it to decline other meetings. It's a protected hour where nobody can bother them. HR found out and asked IT to remove it. I canceled the series. Within 20 minutes, 14 employees complained. One director said the meeting was essential to his team's productivity. I reminded him Gary has been retired for six years. He said Gary's absence wasn't relevant. By Thursday, three department heads had escalated the issue to my boss. Apparently removing a meeting that nobody attends has caused a measurable decline in employee satisfaction. We restored the meeting. Because Gary's account no longer exists, IT now owns the calendar invite. We're technically hosting a weekly meeting for 23 employees where the organizer is dead to the company and nobody shows up. HR wants to recognize Gary for his outstanding contribution to work-life balance.

🦔Researchers studied data donated by 80 ChatGPT users and found the chatbot created 96% of its memories about them on its own, without being asked. About half of those memories described people’s desires, intentions, emotions or beliefs, and roughly a third of users had health information stored. My Take OpenAI started selling ads in February, and it says it can use your past chats and memories to personalize them if you turn personalized ads on. People tell a chatbot things they’d never type into a search bar, which makes that profile worth far more to advertisers than a browsing history. OpenAI says advertisers never see your conversations, and that can be true while your chats still decide which ads you get. You can view and delete these memories. OpenAI admits the summary you see may not include everything the system uses, though, and deleting a chat doesn’t necessarily erase what it learned. Meta has used AI chats to target ads since last December, with no way to opt out, and most big chatbots will follow. If you ask these tools about your health or your money, turn memory off and keep personalized ads switched off. Hedgie🤗 futurism.com/artificial-inte…

I feel sad for the gentleman involved. TBQF, it is increasingly difficult to tell if images and videos are AI. It is even harder to identify if they are being reused on other platforms as well. It seems that AI is being used for so many ads, for example. malwarebytes.com/blog/scams/…

70% of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up. He rules. theatlantic.com/technology/2…

PSA: This week was kind of a turning point for AI and cybersecurity. Please take this weekend to do some simple cleanup for your family. Some suggestions: - Set up a password manager like 1Password and give your spouse or partner access to a shared vault. Teach them how to use it. - Update your passwords for critical stuff - your email account, your bank or financial stuff, etc. Store in your password manager and use the strongest password you can. - Use two factor auth for everything you can. SMS is not ideal although better than nothing. Google Authenticator or a passkey is better. Hardware key is safest.) - Add a sim pin to your phone. Makes it harder to sim jack. - Update your phone and your computer to the newest releases. Turn auto-updates on. - Freeze your credit - takes 5 minutes. - Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN. - If you’re using claude code or have AI agents that browse the web, they’re probably using Node.js. It’s also vulnerable. Update claude code, update node on your machine. - If you’re building stuff on your computer, ask claude or grokbot (which is connected to twitter and likely has the most current info) to audit any of your repos for vulnerabilities. Ask grok to make it a scheduled task so it can do this daily - things are moving very quickly in the space right now. - Consider some light resiliency stuff. This probably sounds silly, but it sounded silly at the beginning of covid too. Having printed out copies of important stuff - especially financial accounts. Having some cash on hand. Having some shelf-stable food and clean water or a water filter. Having a map. Having a generator that can at least power your fridge or some devices. Cheap insurance. Again, I don’t want to alarm people, but I was taught that you should have a Secure plan, a Comfortable plan, and a Wealthy plan. And it seems pretty clear the secure plan needs to now factor cybersecurity risk as a legit threat. Take a weekend and shore yourself up.

Three reasons why AI is not conscious and perhaps never will be nature.com/articles/d41586-0… ✍️ @anilkseth @De_dicto Giulio Tononi via @Nature 👉 The authors argue that today's AI models are smart tools rather than conscious beings because functional intelligence does not entail subjective awareness. 👉 They contend that subjective experience likely depends on biological properties that digital computers inherently lack. 💡By distinguishing between operational intelligence and felt experience, the authors offer a timely and authoritative pushback against exaggerated claims of AI sentience. cc @Corix_JC @TheAIObserverX @maponi @sallyeaves @JagersbergKnut @ahier @ChuckDBrooks @Shi4Tech @CEO_AISOMA @ThEiLe0 @dinisguarda @TarakRindani @FrRonconii @Ym78200 @Nicochan33 @drsharwood @LouisColumbus @Khulood_Almani @TysonLester @SusanHayes_ @EstelaMandela @JoannMoretti @sulefati7 @NeiraOsci @FernandaKellner @pchamard @darioandriani @ALouiseLavalett @Fabriziobustama @amalmerzouk @arlenenewbigg @mikeflache @jenstirrup @AMontespan @RLDI_Lamy @smaksked @Eli_Krumova @PVynckier @chidambara09 @AnneLaureBEAUD2 @sminaev2015 @Analytics_699 @NathaliaLeHen @MHcommunicate @DanielleLargier

Three of the best things to do right now related to personal cybersecurity: 1) keep all your apps and OS (computer and phone) up to date and turn on automatic updates; Amazon had OS update requirements for employees where they would shut off your systems if you were running old OS, treat it that way 2) set up 2FA/MFA and prioritize passkeys/biometrics (ie Face ID and fingerprint); second choice is authenticator app; last resort is text confirmation code and at this point, I would consider that not safe enough 3) ask codex or claude code to run a diagnostic on your personal apps and systems including public-facing artifacts (ex: website), all apps in use, api keys, etc. ask it to do research on what is happening in the world with AI attacks + don’t just review your most common apps, review ALL and ask what to do/walk you through it step by step

Effective Immediately, all organizations using PHP for their systems are advised to be prepared for an update addressing two critical vulnerabilities. PHP is widely used for web applications. These vulnerabilities often provide a direct path to the server's file system or database. If an immediate update is not feasible, it is recommend that organizations take the system offline until it can be fully mitigated. NSA will follow up shortly with more specific guidance.
