There is a painting from 1595 in the National Museum of Serbia.
It shows the Serbian Orthodox bishop Theodore of Vršac, as he was flayed alive by the Ottoman Turks.
This was a common custom, mostly against Christians who refused to convert to Islam.
Despite such cruel tortures and persecutions, the Serbian people preserved their religion, language and identity.

Look back at the 1999 Kosovo War, and the standard history books will tell you a flawless story about a humanitarian rescue. But if you dig beneath the spin, you find a completely different archive of dissent. Journalists, global diplomats, and legal experts saw that 78-day NATO bombing campaign for what it really was: a total assault on the international law.
During the worst of it, veteran British journalist Simon Jenkins dropped a truth bomb in The Times of London. He argued that NATO was committing 'crimes against civilization.' They were literally raining precision missiles down on the oldest pieces of history in Eastern Europe, fracturing 14th-century Byzantine frescoes at GraÄŤanica and blasting holes straight through the roofs of medieval monasteries.
But the truth is, the war was rigged to happen before the first bomb ever dropped. Western leaders publicly blamed Serbia for rejecting the Rambouillet peace treaty. But behind closed doors, U.S. officials intentionally designed the treaty to fail. They inserted a clause demanding that NATO troops have total, unhindered military access to occupy all of Serbia and Montenegro not just Kosovo. Years later, Madeleine Albright’s chief spokesperson, James Rubin, openly admitted to the deception. He flatly stated: “Our internal goal was to get the Albanians to say yes and the Serbs to say no, so that we could trigger the bombing phase.” It wasn't diplomacy. It was a setup to justify a war that had already been decided.
The investigative reporter John Pilger went after the Western press for what he called 'bloody hypocrisy.' He exposed a brutal reality: barely any of NATO’s bombs hit actual frontline military targets. Instead, they gutted daily life—shattering hospitals, flattening schools, and destroying Belgrade’s state TV headquarters, killing 16 media workers in what Pilger flat-out called a war crime.
This anger boiled all the way up to the UN Security Council. The very week the bombing started, India’s representative stood up and warned the world that the UN's authority was one of the earliest victims of NATO’s campaign—setting a terrifying global precedent where military might makes right. Sergey Lavrov, representing Russia, warned that NATO was trying to police the 21st century by force. China took the floor right after, calling the strikes a blatant, illegal violation of the UN Charter.
Even inside Britain, the pushback was noted. Commentator Neil Clark labeled Kosovo as 'Blair's other illegal war,' pointing out that it violated both international law and NATO’s own charter, which only allows force if a member state gets attacked first. The famous playwright Harold Pinter told thousands of protesters in London that the bombardment 'shamed Britain' and treated the UN with total contempt.
And the cost? It was devastatingly real. Official Serbian records place the toll as high as 2,500—including 79 children.
But NATO didn't just target the military; they systematically crippled Serbia’s economic backbone. They dropped bridges, halted trains, and used specialized graphite bombs to short-circuit 70 percent of the country's power grid, turning off electricity to hospitals and water plants. Economists later clocked the damage at a massive 29.6 billion dollars, leaving an entire generations to come in financial ruin.
Then came the invisible warfare. NATO dropped up to 15 tonnes of depleted uranium ammo. That heavy metal vaporized on impact, leaving a toxic dust linked to severe chromosomal damage and a massive spike in cancer rates across southern Serbia. On top of that, they bombed chemical plants and oil refineries in PanÄŤevo and Novi Sad. It was basically chemical warfare by proxy, dumping thousands of tonnes of carcinogens into the air and poisoning the Danube River basin for decades.

Between 1930 and 1933 the Soviet state ordered the Kazakh nomads to stop moving, took their animals for the state's meat quota, and drove the herds to collection points where there was nothing for them to eat, and a people that had lived on milk and meat for three thousand years lost nine animals in ten and four people in ten.
The Kazakhs were not farmers. They were herders of the steppe, moving with the seasons between pastures with their sheep, horses, camels and cattle, living on kumis, mutton and the dried curd of the summer milk, with their wealth on four legs and their houses on carts. Moscow's man in Alma-Ata, Filipp Goloshchekin, who had organised the shooting of the Tsar's family in a cellar, called them backward and announced a Little October: the nomads would be settled on collective farms, their herds would be pooled, and the meat procurement quotas of the five-year plan would come from the animals.
The brigades came and counted the livestock and took it. Herds were driven hundreds of miles to railheads and state farms that had no fodder for them, and died there in heaps, of hunger and the winter, uneaten. Families were ordered to stop in one place on a steppe where staying in one place kills every animal by the end of the season. The quotas were set on paper and enforced with guns, and a Kazakh who slaughtered his own sheep to feed his children was prosecuted for destroying state property. The numbers are the whole story: forty million head of livestock in Kazakhstan in 1929, four million by 1933. Sheep from nineteen million to under two. Camels, the animal that had carried the nation, from a million to seventy thousand.
With the animals gone the people had nothing, because the people were the animals. They walked. More than a million fled, into China, into Siberia, into the towns where they died at the stations, and a million and a half stayed and died on the steppe, something like forty percent of all the Kazakhs alive, the highest death rate of any people in the Soviet famine. Whole clans vanished. The party in Alma-Ata reported that collectivisation was proceeding.
Goloshchekin was shot by his own side in 1941.
A nation built on milk and meat was converted by decree into a nation of grain farmers on land that grows no grain, and the state's ledger had the herds on it as a quota to be delivered, by the ton, dead or alive. The animals had been feeding the Kazakhs for three millennia. The state fed them for three years.

The British escape map of the Second World War was printed on silk because paper got men shot.
The man who designed it was Christopher Clayton Hutton, a First World War pilot and amateur magician who talked his way into MI9, the department whose only job was getting captured servicemen home. He read 50 Great War escape stories before he started, and the thing that came up in all of them was the map.
A paper map fails in every way that matters to a man on the run. It rustles when a guard pats him down. It tears along the folds. It turns to pulp in the first ditch he lies in. And it is too stiff to hide anywhere a search will not find.
So Hutton went to the one firm in Britain that could print on silk, which happened to be Waddingtons, who also held the Monopoly licence, and the maps went out folded into the pieces of a board game sent to the camps through fake charities. Others went into cigarette packets, hollow boot heels, and the lining of a flying jacket.
Silk is a protein spun by a caterpillar. It is stronger for its weight than steel wire, it folds a thousand times without a crack, it dries in minutes, and it makes no sound. Nothing in the chemical industry of 1940 could do all four, and the rayon they tried when the silk ran short was never as good.
Around 400,000 cloth maps were printed. The historians put the men who got home with Hutton's kit in the tens of thousands.
The spy gadget that freed more prisoners than any other in the war was a handkerchief, and the handkerchief was made by a worm.

Atrazine goes on half the corn in America, seventy million pounds a year, and every spring the rain washes it off the fields into the reservoirs of the corn belt in a pulse the water companies can set their calendar by. In 2002 Tyrone Hayes at Berkeley, who had been hired by the maker to test it, found that at a fraction of the legal limit it castrated male leopard frogs and turned some of them into functioning females with eggs. The company tried to keep the results. He published. The documents that came out in court a decade later were the company's plan for him, by name: discredit him, investigate him, have him followed, and buy the search results for his name so his work came up last.
The frogs were the warning. The water is the point. For most of the growing season the taps of Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Kansas and Nebraska run above the European limit, and the water utilities sued the maker to pay for the filters and settled for a hundred million dollars. The European Union looked at the data and banned it because it could not be kept out of the water. The United States looked at the same data and renewed it, twice.
The corn it protects is fed to pigs, burned in cars, and refined into the syrup in the drink.
A pasture has never needed atrazine, and the cows on it drink from the pond. The corn belt puts a chemical through its own taps every June that changes the sex of the thing in the pond, and the official position is that the frogs are not people.
