ALT A large blue oak (Quercus douglasii) photographed in 590nm false color infrared on a family ranch in Shasta County, California. The tree's spring foliage renders almost luminously bright — near white — as chlorophyll-rich leaves reflect near-infrared energy strongly. The surrounding grassy hillside shows the same characteristic bright rendering. The channel-swapped sky reads as a cool, slightly surreal blue, contrasting with the glowing canopy and pale ground cover. The tree is a substantial specimen, its broad crown spreading wide over rolling terrain. The combination of the tree's scale, the gentle hill contours, and the infrared rendering gives the scene an ethereal, painterly quality. April afternoon, Shasta County foothills.
